Selection Process

In Order To Be Considered
In order to be considered for a firefighter / paramedic position, each candidate must complete the following:

If Selected

Selected recruits will attend the Eugene Fire & EMS recruit academy.  The Eugene Fire & EMS recruit academy is fourteen weeks long and has a total of 560 hours.

The curriculum is a combination of classroom lectures, hands-on training on the drill field, EMS skill and protocol orientation, and fitness training. Recruits learn leadership and personal accountability through the “Battalion” configuration of the class that allows each student the opportunity to be responsible for the communication through the “chain of command” on a rotational basis.

Drills and Activities
Classroom lectures are supported by drills and activities on the drill field that reinforce the critical skills that are needed to successfully operate at emergency incidents. Our entire curriculum is focused on operating in the safest manner possible during emergency operations.

Fire recruits will have the opportunity to train and drill with on-duty Eugene Fire & EMS Department personnel and will receive NFPA Firefighter I certification upon graduation from the academy.

Recruits will also receive training in a variety of emergency disciplines including:
  • Rope Rescue
  • Water Rescue
  • Hazardous Materials Response
  • Aircraft Firefighting
  • Wildland Firefighting
After the year long probationary period with expanded training and field experience, the recruit will be certified to the NFPA Firefighter II level.
