Public Works Returns to Normal Operating Hours

Since the ice storm hit more than a week ago, Public Works has responded to more than 900 requests for service. Most of those calls were tree related. Now that all roads are open and passable, most of the critical hazards addressed, Public Works will return to its normal operating hours. Staff will be on standby to respond to emergencies over the holiday weekend.

Public Works is committed to making Eugene a safe and passable City once again. Starting next week, crews will move through neighborhoods and clear storm-related debris from the streets and sidewalks, and haul away any remaining leaves. This is a critical piece in the recovery process.

In addition to clearing streets and sidewalks in neighborhoods, Public Works has also prioritized continued cleaning of priority routes and bike lanes, addressing tree hazards in parks, and reopening miles of closed trails in the parks system. This work will not be easy, nor quick. The impacts of this storm will be felt for years.

Crews have worked more than 3,000 hours since the storm covered Eugene in ice. That’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to making a full recovery. It will likely take several more weeks to clear the neighborhoods.

Public Works would like to thank the community for its continued support. Residents helped identify and locate hazards and closures immediately after the storm. They were patient and understanding as staff prioritized and responded to the greatest threats. Citizens continue to exercise caution as they encounter our cleanup crews working the streets. Residents are also mindful of potential that hazards remain in the community. There are many trees that could still lose their limbs over the coming weeks, both on the streets and in the parks.

Public Works employees are proud and honored to be able to help in this recovery process.
