North Danebo Avenue
North Danebo Avenue Traffic Calming Accessibility Modification
In response to concerns about the accessibility of traffic calming devices for people using wheelchairs or other mobility devices, the traffic calming treatment on N Danebo Avenue will be modified slightly. In late summer, when construction begins, crews will include a three foot wide clear path on the roadway near the curb around each of five traffic calming speed cushions located between Barger Drive and Souza Street. Since there are no continuous sidewalks on N Danebo Avenue between Barger Drive and Souza Street, people using mobility devices must travel in the street. The traffic calming treatment between Souza Street and Avalon Street does not require this modification as there are adequate sidewalks available for accessible mobility. The on-street passage at each traffic calming speed cushion location will provide people using wheelchairs or other mobility devices unobstructed passage along the street. Additionally, there will be no parking allowed in the immediate vicinity of the traffic calming in order to keep the passageway accessible to people using wheelchairs or mobility devices.
N Danebo Avenue neighbors will see the construction of traffic calming speed cushions in late summer of 2015. Following two community meetings on April 7 and 22, 2015 at Danebo Elementary School, neighbors voted by mail-in ballot to support traffic calming. The installation of speed cushions is intended to reduce the speed of traffic on N Danebo Avenue in response to neighborhood concern about speeding traffic and safety along the street.
Ballots were mailed to the owners and residents of 76 properties between Barger Drive and Avalon Street with direct access to N Danebo Avenue, and 200 feet up side-streets. To move forward with the traffic calming proposal, support needed to be demonstrated by at least 60% of respondents, representing at least 50% of the surveyed properties. There were 46 votes in favor and 7 votes opposed (87% in support) representing 53 of the 76 properties (a 70% response rate).
A series of nine traffic calming speed cushions will be placed between Barger Drive and Avalon Street at no additional cost to property owners. Before and after speed studies will be conducted on N Danebo Avenue to determine the effect of the traffic calming.
