The Need For Specialized Units

While regular patrol teams handle typical calls for service and crime prevention activities, sometimes more specialized units are needed. A number of these focused units are organized under the Special Operations (Ops) Section of the Patrol Division. Special Ops includes units to which officers are assigned full-time, such as the:

  • Crisis Negotiation Team
  • Crowd Control Team
  • Explosives Disposal Unit
  • Honor Guard
  • K-9 Unit
  • School Resource Team
  • Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team
  • Traffic Enforcement Unit

The specialized units are activated as needed. The Special Operations Section is commanded by a police lieutenant who reports to the Patrol Division captain. The section employs about 25 sworn officers and two civilian administrative aides full-time, but dozens of officers with regular duties as patrol officers or detectives also serve on Special Operations ad hoc teams.
