City of Eugene Building and Permit Services is hosting an open house from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on May 21st. Storm Recovery Moving Quickly
03/15/2019 - More and more streets and sidewalks continue to be cleared of storm-related debris, giving more space for people to safely move about following the February snow storms. Public works crews will today wrap up their second week of recovery efforts. They’ve quickly moved through the city to remove tree hazards and remove debris that was in the right-of-way.

02/25/2019 - The City of Eugene has declared an ice/snow emergency, effective immediately. The emergency declaration means all vehicles must be removed immediately from designated snow emergency routes.

Amazon Parkway to Reopen Today
02/06/2019 - Construction crews will today reopen Amazon Parkway between 19th and 24th avenues. Crews closed the road last month so they could safely relocate sewer lines at and near the Civic Park property. They also removed the pedestrian bridge that spanned Amazon Parkway.

1/25/2019 - Despite a slow and busy start, the 2018-19 Leaf Collection and Delivery season is now complete. Public works crews wrapped up their second and final sweep through the city earlier this month. People should not put any more leaves curbside, but instead utilize their yard debris bins.

Williams/Dame and Associates signs DDA with City to move forward on Downtown Riverfront Development
Eugene’s vision of transforming the vacant, former EWEB industrial site into a vibrant new riverfront neighborhood took a major step forward today. The development group Williams/Dame & Associates (WDA) has signed a Disposition and Development Agreement (DDA) with the Urban Renewal Agency (Agency) of the City of Eugene to move forward with the Downtown Riverfront redevelopment, which has been a shared community goal for decades. The City chose WDA for its experience and commitment to bringing this beautiful new neighborhood to fruition for the benefit of all Eugeneans.

Amazon Parkway closed starting January 21
January 14, 2019 - Amazon Parkway will be closed to all traffic starting Monday, January 21. The closure will impact both southbound and northbound lanes, between 19th and 24th avenues, and could last until February 7. Drivers should expect delays as they travel around the work zone and plan accordingly.

Temporary shelter for unhoused proposed for City Hall lot
At their Monday, October 22 work session, the Eugene City Council will discuss moving forward with a plan that could allow a portion of the vacant City Hall lot to serve as a temporary day center and overnight safe-sleeping location for the unhoused.

Traffic Advisory: Construction starts Wednesday on W Amazon
08/13/2018 - The project to improve and rebuild parts of West Amazon Drive starts on Wednesday, August 15. Work will focus on the section of West Amazon between Hilyard Street and Fox Hollow Road. Construction crews will rebuild the road, sidewalk access ramps, and restripe the road to include a one-way buffered bike lane northbound.

Residential Streets Highlight Busy Road Construction Season
05/03/2018 - Eugene Public Works is planning for another busy year of road construction projects. In all, construction crews will rebuild or resurface more than 20 roads throughout the city. While most of the projects are on local, residential streets, crews will improve four main corridors as well as enhance safety features for people who walk and bike. Combined, the improvements are expected to total more than $10 million and repave a total of more than 18 lane miles of streets.

Construction Set to Begin on West Eugene Multiuse Path
04/27/2018 - Eugene Public Works will start construction next week on the new Jessen Path in west Eugene. Once completed, the 1.5-mile-long concrete path will serve Golden Gardens Park and the nearby neighborhood. The path will run along the southern edge of the park, offering bucolic viewing opportunities of native trees and grasses, wildflowers, and local wildlife.

The City of Eugene and Eugene Water & Electric Board are pleased to announce the successful completion of an agreement that transfers 16 acres of riverfront property to the City’s Riverfront Urban Renewal Agency in a deal that will help transform the center of Eugene by connecting downtown to the Willamette River.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Expect Delays on Saturday, March 24 in Downtown
03/23/2018 - Drivers should plan for delays on Saturday, March 24, in parts of downtown Eugene. Public works staff will close several roads to accommodate a planned march through the northern section of downtown.
Road closures will start around 10 a.m. and are expected to last until mid-afternoon. The area of impacts are as follows:
• Ferry Street Bridge at 6th Avenue and Mill Street on the east end
• Portions of 5th Avenue on the north end
• Olive Street on the west end
• Broadway on the southern portion
The route will take demonstrators onto several streets throughout downtown. Police will be on hand to help direct traffic. People who are trying to get across town are encouraged to use 11th and 13th avenues.

Traffic Alert: Parts of Jefferson Street Closed for Striping
On Friday, December 8, Jefferson Street, from 13th to 18th avenues, will be closed for striping. Along with striping, crews will also install crosswalks and other legends. The closure is necessary to ensure safety for workers and to allow the material time to cure before permitting cars back on the road.

Eugene Voters Reinvest in City Streets and Safety
For the third time in 10 years, Eugene voters resoundingly expressed their commitment to repair city streets and improve safety for people who bike and walk. During the November 7 Special Election, voters approved ballot measure 20-275, a $51.2 million bond dedicated to street preservation and bicycle and pedestrian projects.

Vision Zero Action Plan Released; Open House Scheduled
The draft Vision Zero Action Plan has been released and now it’s time for the public to weigh in. Vision Zero is the goal of eliminating all deaths and life-changing injuries on Eugene’s streets by 2035. From 2007 to 2016, 60 people were killed in traffic crashes in Eugene and another 364 people suffered life-changing injuries. That’s an average death or life-changing injury every eight days in our community. A Task Force consisting of City Executive staff and local community leaders developed an action plan to help the city reach the Vision Zero goal.

Two-Way Street Conversion of Lawrence Street Complete
Traffic is flowing in both directions on Lawrence Street between west 7th and 13th avenues. City staff yesterday finalized the conversion of this stretch of Lawrence Street with the intent of making the road safer.

Bike Share Secures Sponsorship and Looks to Spring Launch
Eugene’s bike share system is excited to announce the confirmation of a title sponsor! Title sponsorship will help support operations expenses and provide a strong foundation for the long-term sustainability of the system. The Eugene Bike Share Feasibility Study Final Report highlighted the importance of title sponsorship in successful bike share systems. The official title sponsorship announcement event, which will include the unveiling of the branded bikes and system name, will take place in November.

Smart Trips and AARP Event Rescheduled 8/29/2017
The AARP and Smart Trips Eugene NeighborWalk: Green Resiliency in the River Road Community walking event, scheduled for this evening at 6pm in the River Road Community, will be cancelled due to poor air quality. Particulate matter 2.5 is at an “unhealthy” level according to the Lane Regional Air Protection Agency. The event will be rescheduled at a date TBA.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Phase 3 of Jefferson Street Project Starts Monday August 28th
The third phase of the Jefferson Street Resurfacing Project will get underway on Monday, August 28th. Crews will close Jefferson Street between 13th and just south of 15th Avenues. Work will include rebuilding the travel lanes and sidewalk access ramps through this corridor.
During the closure, the 15th Avenue bicycle route will be detoured around construction via 16th Avenue.
The work is expected to last until mid-October and is the third of four phases for the Jefferson Street project. As with any road construction, drivers are urged to slow down in and around construction zones.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Permanent Striping Change for 30th Ave
Starting early Friday morning, August 25, contracting crews will begin restriping the newly resurfaced portion of 30th Avenue between Agate Street and the Spring Blvd overpass. The permanent striping will reduce westbound traffic to one lane starting at the Spring Boulevard Overpass.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Jefferson St. Limited to One Lane at 15th Ave.
Phase two of the Jefferson Street construction project is ahead of schedule. To continue that momentum, crews have started work today to replace a stormwater sewer pipe at the intersection of Jefferson Street and 15th Avenue. One lane of the road is open to traffic, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Flaggers will direct traffic. The work is expected to last until August 28th.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Amazon Park Bike Path Closed Starting Monday, August 14
08/11/2017 Starting Monday, August 14, Amazon Park Bike Path will be closed on the south side of 24th Avenue to the Amazon Pool and Hilyard Community Center turn off.
Public Works crews will remove and replace about 160 feet of damaged concrete on the bike path. People who use the path are advised to watch for workers and signage as well as consider alternate routes. The work is expected to last until Tuesday, August 22.

The return of the parade on Sunday July 30 in downtown Eugene proved to be a EUG success with thousands of people lining the streets to watch the 35 colorful entries. There were horses, ponies, robots, ballet dancers, folk dancers, the beloved Rickies and more.

Smoke Testing to Begin in West Eugene
07/07/2017 Starting Monday, July 10, Eugene Public Works will start an extensive test of the wastewater sewer line segments in the Churchill, Far West and Southwest Hills neighborhoods using dyed water and isolated smoke testing. The testing, which is endorsed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, uses a non-toxic smoke to help identify defects and improper connections that cause stormwater runoff and ground water to enter the public wastewater collection system.

Crews Continue to Clear Priority Routes, Watching Weather
1/7/2017 Eugene Public Works continues to work around the clock clearing roads and have crews on standby in case trees and branches start to break and fall.
The freezing rain started in Eugene around 5 a.m. Crews continued to put down sand on priority routes and respond to slick spots throughout the day. However there are several layers of ice and snow on the road and people are urged to stay at home if possible.

12/22/2016 Since the ice storm hit more than a week ago, Public Works has responded to more than 900 requests for service. Most of those calls were tree related. Now that all roads are open and passable, most of the critical hazards addressed, Public Works will return to its normal operating hours. Staff will be on standby to respond to emergencies over the holiday weekend.

12/21/2016 On Wednesday, Dec. 14, a major storm moved through Eugene coating much of the city in ice, leading to treacherous conditions, falling trees and limbs, and downed power lines across the city, causing power outages for approximately 20,000 homes and businesses.

12/21/2016 Trails in several Eugene parks are closed indefinitely due to extreme hazards caused by last week’s ice storm. Trails on Skinner Butte, Spencer Butte, in Hendricks Park and through the Ridgeline Trail System are closed. All City parks remain open, including the park walks in Skinner Butte Park, however people are advised to use caution.

12/19/2016 Eugene Public Works has cancelled this season’s future leaf collection and delivery program. Public Works has shifted its focus to storm debris cleanup of public trees. Starting Tuesday, crews will move through the city and pick up storm debris and any remaining leaves that are still in the street.

12/16/16 The Eugene Public Work’s leaf collection and delivery program will continue in a reduced capacity starting Monday. The program was suspended due to the ice storm. The storm may create treacherous conditions on the roads and any ice accumulations could cause tree damage and power outages.

12/7/2016 -- Eugene Public Works is closely monitoring a winter storm that could create treacherous conditions for Thursday, December 8. Forecasts are calling for icy conditions, including freezing rain, during the early morning hours and commute and may last into the early afternoon.
In preparation for the event, Public Works dedicated nine trucks to the response, with equipment ranging from deicers and sanders to snow plows. Staff will monitor roads and bridges overnight, and focus on high-priority commuter routes on Thursday morning.

10/17/16 - The City of Eugene will hold a community meeting on Wednesday, October 19, to review a proposal for traffic calming on Polk Street (between 24th and 28th avenues) and 24th Avenue (between Chambers and Friendly streets). The proposed changes are designed to keep drivers from speeding through the area. At the meeting, staff will review the proposal and take public comments.

Eugene Sunday Streets Breaks Attendance Record
Now in its sixth year, Eugene Sunday Streets is as popular as ever. An estimated 4,450 people attended Sunday’s event in the South University neighborhood. Combined with the downtown event in July, the two Eugene Sunday Street events attracted more than 10,400 participants, a new record. The previous high mark was set in 2015 with about 7,100 participants.

Marker to Return to “Original” Eugene Corner
One of the last true corners of Eugene, part of the Skinner Donation Land Claim, will be remembered in a special ceremony. On Thursday, September 22, at 10:30 a.m., the City will replace a placard near the intersection of 8th Avenue and Mill Street. The placard was removed last year for the construction of the new Whole Foods store in downtown Eugene.

Traffic Advisory: Willamette Street Construction Starts Monday
A project to rebuild parts of Willamette Street begins Monday, September 12. The work will take several weeks and include lane closures and the elimination of street parking.
Knife River Construction crews, working under contract for the Eugene Public Works Department, will reconstruct Willamette Street from 13th to 11th avenues and resurface the road between 11th and 10th avenues. They will also widen part of the sidewalk next to the 13th and Olive apartment complex and relocate a bus shelter.

New authorized car camping site in southeast Eugene established for NHS residents
04/14/2014 The remaining six residents of the non-profit Nightingale Health Sanctuary (NHS) rest stop will be moving to a designated car camping site on the City-owned lot at 34th and Hilyard near Good Samaritan Society assisted living facility. This interim solution allows NHS to continue to provide unhoused individuals with a safe and legal place to sleep and assistance in connecting with social services, while City staff continues to work with NHS, community members and neighborhood groups to search for a site for their long-term operations.
