[ARCHIVED] Winter storm warning

The National Weather Service is forecasting periods of rain this afternoon with a likelihood of freezing rain, beginning soon and continuing into the evening. With warmer temperatures predicted tomorrow, there is a strong possibility of slushy and/or icy road and sidewalk conditions.

If freezing rain does arrive it is anticipated to occur in early afternoon with accumulation of less than a tenth of an inch and transition to normal rain aiding in melting snow. Chances of freezing rain are higher in the South Hills.

As conditions improve travel will still be hazardous as packed snow melts, slushes, and refreezes. Caution is still advised through the weekend.

Road Crews and Tree Crews will be positioned on both sides of Ferry Street Bridge in preparation for a greater than expected impact from freezing rain.

If freezing rain does occur, conditions will be very hazardous. Travel should be limited at that time. All predictions indicate there will be a thaw after the freezing rain.

Driving and walking during freezing rain present particular hazards. Watch for possible falling limbs and power lines.
