At 1:55 a.m., as patrons were leaving the bar after a concert, officers were dispatched to the dispute. The initial information indicated security guards at the location were involved in a physical dispute with multiple subjects, and that at least one subject, Joquan Alfred Pennington, age 23, was armed with a handgun that fell out during the dispute. The gun was scooped up by a bystander who ran away. Pennington fled on foot, and was soon captured by police. As the officers were patting down Pennington, a large crowd gathered and numerous members yelled expletives at the officers and began approaching closer. The officers put Pennington into the patrol vehicle and left.
A vehicle associated with Pennington was nearby and as officers were apprehending Pennington, the driver, Geontae Brachaurd Jones, age 21, revved the vehicle’s engine and fled the parking lot at a high-rate of speed nearly striking the arresting officers and pedestrians. Eugene Police K-9 officers eventually located the vehicle unoccupied near the Amtrak station, and were then able to track, and arrest the driver, and a passenger, DeAnthony Paul Simmons, age 20.
