Through an ongoing, collaborative partnership between Bethel School District and the City of Eugene, Willamette High School (WHS) was selected as the winner of the 2014 Oregon Sustainable School Award by the Oregon Department of Education. WHS also received the 2014 Oregon Pillar 2 Award for healthy, safe students and staff. The Sustainable School Award acknowledges a comprehensive approach to sustainability in four content areas:

1. Environmental Impacts
2. Healthy, Safe Students and Staff
3. Education for Sustainability: Environmental and Social Literacy
4. Social Sustainability

Bethel neighborhood schools enhance neighborhood livability and high quality school programming. The schools provide a long-term investment in our community and our economy while maintaining opportunities for academic enrichment, an improved quality of life, and a vision of hope for the future. As a result of WHS’ achievements, the school has also been nominated for a national Green Ribbon School award by the US Department of Education. The Green Ribbon Award will be announced on Earth Day: April 22, 2014.

The City of Eugene has been partnering with the Bethel School District over the last year as part of a pilot program that integrates investments in the buildings, curricula, educational programming, and on-going facility operations.
