Investigators have been continuing the investigation into Charles Lewis Irwin's death and have been able to determine it was caused by injuries consistent with being run over by a vehicle. The incident occurred around 11:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 30 at S. Danebo Avenue near W. 11th Avenue. With this new information, they are reaching out and would like any potential witnesses or people with information to contact Officer Scott Dillon at 541.682.5470.
PREVIOUS INFORMATION
Charles Lewis Irwin, age 33, has died of injuries he sustained under unknown circumstances. At 11:08 p.m. yesterday, July 30, Irwin was found at S. Danebo Avenue near W. 11th Avenue. A bicycle was found nearby, but there were no vehicles on-scene. Irwin was transported to a local hospital, but died. Eugene Police Major Collision Investigation team and the Forensic Evidence Unit was called out to investigate.
The help of witnesses will be very important in this case. If anyone saw a man on a bike in the Danebo/W. 11th area before the incident, if they saw him after the incident while he was lying in the roadway, or if they have information about any other contacts the man might have had, they are asked to call Officer Scott Dillon at 541.682.5470. Even insignificant details can become important.
Irwin is described as white, 5’10” tall, 180 pounds, with very short almost shaved brown hair, green eyes. He was wearing shorts or cut-offs, grey short sleeve shirt, had a full black backpack, and a black baseball cap. He was riding a blue bmx-style bike. Most recently he was listed as a Springfield resident.
Major Collision Investigation Team
The Eugene Police Department’s Major Collision Investigation Team (MCI), is an ad hoc team comprising several officers and a sergeant who are specifically and extensively trained to investigate motor vehicle collisions. These officers all have full-time assignments in the patrol or investigations division, but are on call to respond to major vehicle collisions.
MCI is activated to reconstruct serious collisions, such as when there has been a fatality or life-threatening injury, or when a DUII collision causes serious injuries. The team is also activated to investigate crash scenes when a police pursuit or a collision involving a city vehicle generates any significant injury or damage, and sometimes in other circumstances in which investigating officers require technical assistance.
Forensic Evidence Unit
The Forensic Evidence Unit, which is the state of Oregon’s first local lab to receive American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors Accreditation (2013), serves the community’s criminal justice needs through education and the application of accepted scientific techniques to the preservation and analysis of physical evidence. Eugene Police Department’s Forensic Evidence Unit (FEU) employs four full-time civilian forensic analysts, one forensic technician, an administrative aide (shared with the Property Control Unit) and has multiple volunteers.
