[ARCHIVED] Public Input Sought on Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan

The cities of Eugene and Springfield have drafted an update of the existing Multijurisdictional Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan. This work is being performed in partnership with the Oregon Partnership for Disaster Resilience with funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant Program.

A natural hazards mitigation plan provides communities with a set of goals, action items, and resources designed to reduce risk from future natural disaster events. The public is invited to review and provide comments on the current draft by December 31, 2014. The plan is available on the City of Eugene website: Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan.

With re-adoption of the plan in early 2015, the cities of Eugene and Springfield will maintain their eligibility to apply for federal funding towards natural hazard mitigation projects. The current update includes input from a wide range of representatives from across the community including city government, local utility providers and others.

Having a plan and engaging in mitigation activities provides jurisdictions with a number of benefits, including reduced loss of life, property, essential services, critical facilities and economic hardship; reduced short-term and long-term recovery and reconstruction costs; increased cooperation and communication within the community through the planning process; and increased potential for state and federal funding for recovery and reconstruction projects.

If you have any questions regarding the Eugene/Springfield Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan or the update process in general, please call Matt McRae, Project Manager for the Plan update, at (541) 682-5649 or e-mail matt.a.mcrae@ci.eugene.or.us
