Due to concerns about the recent hot, dry weather, the Eugene City Council voted to establish a partial ban on the use of fireworks that are usually allowed June 23 through July 6. The ban applies to all areas within City limits south of 18th Avenue and all areas east of Agate Street. These areas of Eugene are considered to have the most significant risk due to the fuel load, topography, narrow roads and areas with one way in and one way out.
Illegal fireworks remain banned throughout the city, and the prohibition of fireworks during the rest of the year will remain in effect.
The Council made the decision during an emergency meeting called by Mayor Piercy in response to concerns about fire dangers associated with severe drought conditions. Councilors voted unanimously in support of the partial ban and use of contingency funds for enforcement efforts associated with the ordinance.
Officials continue to urge caution with use of legal fireworks in all other areas of the city. Keep it legal, keep it safe!
