15-14573 – On August 26, at approximately 8:30 p.m., police responded to the Shari’s Restaurant located at 2950 W. 11th Avenue regarding a disorderly male breaking windows out of a parked car. Police arrived and observed the suspect, later identified as Matthew Robey McClendon, age 37, standing near the vehicle with the broken window, holding a machete. The officers contacted the suspect, who was compliant with directions from the officers, and taken into custody. Police found information that the vehicle with the broken windows possibly belonged to McClendon. Bystanders had reported that he damaged the vehicle with a rock and machete following a verbal dispute with a female subject. Police also received information that the vehicle and McClendon, were also suspected of being involved in a hit and run crash that happened around 5:27 p.m. the same day near the intersection of W. 11th Ave. and Garfield St. At that time, police received information that a vehicle matching the description of McClendon’s vehicle, had struck another vehicle from behind that had been stopped at a traffic light. The victim attempted to contact the driver, but he continued to drive away. McClendon was arrested and transported to the Lane County Jail for Disorderly Conduct, Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree – Resulting in a Criminal Act, Criminal Trespass in the Second Degree, and Hit and Run – Vehicle Damage.
On August 26, at 9:42 p.m., an officer patrolling 6th and Almaden Street spotted a bicyclist riding in the dark through the alley without any lighting equipment. He stopped the bicyclist, later identified as Sean Christopher Savage, age 44, of Eugene. Savage provided a false name and the officer admonished him not to do this. Savage quickly rode off on his bicycle. A sergeant located his bicycle near 8th Avenue and Almaden Street and a K9 unit was requested and came from Springfield to help search. The K9 unit found Savage hiding in the backyard of a home in the 800 block of Almaden and he was arrested. Methamphetamines were found in his possession and he had warrants. He was charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, Interfering with a Peace Officer, False Info to Police Officer, and the warrants.
Motorcyclist Drives on Golf Course Arrested for DUII - On August 25 at 9:04 a.m., police were dispatched to the Laurelwood Golf Course at 2700 Columbia Street, for reports of a possibly intoxicated motorcyclist riding his black 2014 Honda Rebel through the golf course. Dispatch advised officers that the rider left the location on foot northbound on Columbia and was being followed by a golf course staff member.
An officer located the suspect rider, Christopher Leon Gralnic, age 19, of Springfield. He was detained at E. 24th Avenue between Agate Street and Columbia Street and after an investigation was arrested and lodged at the Lane County Jail for DUII (Marijuana), Criminal Mischief 3, Reckless Driving, and Criminal Trespass 2. It was reported Gralnic had driven on pathways of the course, then down a hill, sliding on the grass, crashing, then gotten back on the motorcycle and peeled out up a hill, before getting back on a walkway. A staff member gave chase on a Gator ATV, yelling at Gralnic to leave the property. At one point, Gralnic nearly hit the staff member on the ATV when he drove his motorcycle past a busy intersection in the walkways. Gralnic then got off the motorcycle and left it on the path before leaving.Case Number 1514455
August 26, at approximately 12:45 p.m., a police officer observed a male subject traveling on bike, lose control while attempting to turn north on Jefferson Street, from W. 13th Avenue, and nearly crash into an oncoming car. The officer contacted the suspect, Michael Fuller Torrey, age 53, of Eugene, and arrested him for DUII and a warrants. Case Number 15-14478
August 18, At approximately 4:42 p.m., police arrested Margaret Elizabeth Milligan, age 59, at her residence in Springfield, regarding a reported incident that happened at a local Nursing Home. Police received information that the suspect entered the nursing home unannounced and removed an elderly female relative from the home, and did not follow the established protocol to remove the victim. During the removal of the victim, a person observed the suspect, pushing the victim in a wheelchair at an unsafe speed and the wheelchair tipped over while going over a curb, causing the victim to fall onto the pavement. Medics responded and transported the victim to the hospital for evaluation. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Lane County Jail for Kidnap in the Second Degree, Trespass in the Second Degree, and Felony Assault in the Fourth Degree – APA.
On August 15, at 12:14 a.m., one of our officers stopped a Eugene man, later identified as Jesse James Garza, age 29, at W. 11th Avenue and Chambers Street, as he was riding his bike the wrong way in the bike lane. The bicyclist pulled into the parking lot of papas Pizza. Garza was acting nervous and he was initially holding a golf club. The officer told him to put the club down and he did. Garza, who had a warrant, was agitated. The officer asked him to sit on the curb. He sat down, but then stood back up. The officer had to tell him multiple times to sit down. Before the officer could call for a cover unit, Garzo took off on foot. Another officer caught up with him and put him on the ground. Garza struggled with the officer and the officer’s emergency button was activated. Assisting officers arrived in an expedited response and assisted in taking Garza into custody. Garza’s backpack contained Methamphetamine, a make shift weapon made from an altered golf club, and a large knife. He was arrested on his warrants, as well as for Possession of a Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine), Resisting Arrest and Interfering. Case number 15-13858
On August 15 at 4:11 in the morning, a, 84-year-old man called 9-1-1 after he awoke to find an unknown male crouching down next to his bed. The suspect, later identified as Eric Michael Borchman, age 29 ,of Myrtle Point, jumped up and fled east bound on foot from the home, which is in the 1400 block of W. 12th. Responding officers set up a good perimeter and requested assistance from Springfield Police K-9. The K-9 tracked the suspect to W. 12th Avenue and Almaden, where the suspect was discovered hiding under a truck. The SPD K-9 helped take the resisting suspect into custody. The K-9 retraced the route and located the stolen property discarded along the tracking path. And some items were recovered from underneath the suspect. The victim a veteran, received back some property that he had used while in the Navy in WWII. The suspect was treated at a hospital for a bite and then taken to Jail. UDH for his puncture wounds. On August 11, at 6:30 p.m., our officers responded to the area of 717 Hwy 99N in Eugene Oregon for a report of a disorderly subject with what looked like a shotgun but may be a BB gun. Upon arrival they contacted Ivan Laird Warren, age 34, of Eugene. He had a pellet rifle with a scope and the barrel, which was removed from it. It was reported he was asking people if they wished to by the rifle. As he was assembling the barrel on it, he pulled the trigger and the gun discharged. When the 60-year-old male (no address) he was speaking with refused to buy it, he threatened to kill him and shoot a 50-year-old man’s dog (the man had already left the area). After he threatened to shoot the dog, he grabbed a chainsaw and threatened to cut them. He was arrested for Menacing and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. Case Number 1513611.
On August 11 at 6:42 p.m. one of our officers was dispatched to a disorderly subject at Hirons’, 185 E. 18th Avenue, and 145 E.18th Avenue (Safeway). The subject, later identified as Chad Brian Tudor, age 43, of Eugene, was reported to have been inside Safeway, standing by the register yelling and swearing and causing a disturbance. Employees were paged to the front via intercom. Tudor left and walked to Hiron’s, where he continued to be disorderly, knocking down merchandise and then stealing a large metal pole with a hose hanger on it. As Tudor walked off with the pole, a 36-year-old Eugene male followed him and a security guard also followed behind the 36-year-old. During his flight, Tudor swung the metal pole trying to hit the 36-year-old male. Subsequently Tudor also threw a chunk of asphalt and a beer bottle, trying to hit him. The beer bottle struck a 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander, causing damage. Tudor walked into backyards with “No Trespassing” signs posted. The victim continued to follow Tudor and at one point when Tudor charged at him, the victim attempted to pepper spray him. Tudor swung fence boards at him, almost hitting him. Eugene Police arrived and were able to speak with Tudor, get him to sit down and then detained him. He was charged with seven counts of Disorderly Conduct, five counts of Menacing, four counts of Attempted Assault, three counts of Criminal Trespass, three counts of Criminal Mischief in the third degree, one count of Criminal Mischief in the second degree and one count of Theft in the third degree. On August 9 at 12:37 a.m., a 25-year-old woman at Jameson’s Bar was approached by a man, later identified as Colby Ray Cady, age 34, of Eugene. He asked her for a cigarette. She reported she does not smoke and did not have any cigarettes, and that Cady then punched her in the head. She fell to the ground and another male in the bar came to help her. Cady then tried to punch that man. As our officers arrived, Downtown Guides were separating a group of four to five individuals. One of the guides was trying to gain control of a man later identified as Cady. The officer went to assist the guide with Cady, and Cady pulled away and began running from our officer. The officer commanded him to stop, but he refused and kept running. The guide and the officer lost sight of Cady and the officer returned to the bar, while our other officers continued to look for Cady. Another officer was flagged down by WOW Hall and told that the man he was looking for was at Chevron, 330 W. 7th, and he described him as having had a black eye and that he had shed his shirt. The officer located Cady, noting he appeared angry, intoxicated and had facial injuries. The officer ordered him to sit on the ground and he refused. The officer told him he’d pepper spray him if he didn’t comply. Cady still did not comply and was sprayed. Cady, spun and began running away. The officer was also affected by the pepper spray and ran after him. Cady ran behind an apartment complex and into a back patio area of one of the units. The officer caught up with him and shoved into him as he rounded a corner. Cady went into the wall of the building and then fell on the ground. Cady refused to go onto his stomach and struggled with police. A bystander approached and began yelling at the officers, unaware of the dangerous situation and that Cady was not in custody yet. Cady had his right hand tucked under his body near his waistband and he refused to bring it out. The officer resorted to a taser to gain his compliance and another officer was able to help get his hands out and handcuff him without further incident. They used a garden hose to wash the pepper spray off Cady, who was then taken to the hospital for treatment, then to Jail and charged with Assault, Resisting Arrest, and Interfering. Case Number 15-13459.
On August 9, around 3 a.m., Our officers responded to information regarding a burglary in progress at a residence on the 500 block of Division Ave. The victim left the location before our officers arrived. When we did arrive, our officers could hear what sounded like items inside the residence being broken, and attempted to contact the suspect, Daniel Thomas Hill, age 19, of Eugene, who then ran from the back of the residence through neighboring yards, and was eventually taken into custody in the backyard of a neighboring residence. Hill was arrested for Possession of Heroin, Possession Methamphetamine, Criminal Mischief in the First Degree – Vandalism, and Interfering with a Peace Officer, Disorderly Conduct.
On August 8 at 1:46 p.m., our officers were dispatched to a theft in progress at Shopko, 2815 Chad Drive. A loss prevention officer reported a male, later identified as Eric Malcolm Robinson, age 33, of Tacoma, Washington, was in the store, selected a knife, and put it in his pocket. He was then observed using the knife to open other unpurchased items. Robinson was reported to have pulled out a large chain and menaced the loss prevention officer with it when the loss prevention officer stopped him outside the store and confronted him. Robinson fled the scene on a bike, but the loss prevention officer followed him and updated 9-1-1 with information on his direction of travel. Officers received information that he had jumped a fence and was in the backyard of a house. A sergeant located Robinson on Crescent Avenue and took him into custody without incident. He was charged with – Robbery in the First Degree, Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree. Case Number 15-13432.
On August 7, at approximately 8:51 p.m., police responded to the Taste of India on Hilyard Street, regarding information that a subject had thrown a rock at an employee of the restaurant. Police arrived to the location and contacted the involved subjects, and informed the suspect, Charles William Durbin, age 59, that he needed to leave the property. A short time later our officer received information that the suspect had thrown a rock at the establishment and then left southbound on Hilyard Street. We located Durbin in the area of 24th Ave. and Alder St. and placed him under arrest for Unlawful Use of a Weapon – Aggravated Assault, Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree – Resulting in a Criminal Act, and Disorderly Conduct in the Second Degree. Case Number 15-13398.
On August 6, at 6:36 a.m., an officer was called to 7-Elevent at 951 W. 6th Avenue after reports of a possibly robbery and stabbing. While enroute, the officer heard dispatch advise the suspect was being held on the ground by another individual. The suspect, Robert Anthony Hugillsmith, age 18, no address, was detained by arriving officers. It was determined that Hugillsmith had warrants. When police spoke with the victim in the matter, they found that Hugillsmith did not commit a robbery, but that he trespassed at the location and threatened the 38-year-old employee with a knife when confronted regarding the trespass. Hugillsmith was lodged for Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Menacing, Criminal Trespass II, and the two confirmed warrants. Case Number 1513274
On August 4 at 1:14 a.m., police were dispatched to the Black Forest Tavern at 30 E. 11th Ave. CAHOOTS was requesting emergency response by police, as they spotted a male, later identified as Cody Angel Saville, age 37, of Eugene, point a firearm at another male, age 22, in front of the tavern. He is reported to have said he was a volunteer public safety officer, then left the tavern, then come back in with a pack, and left again without it.
Police took Saville into custody as he was crossing Oak Street. Saville appeared intoxicated. He was searched with his consent and there were no weapons found. He was detained while the pack was searched for, but it was not located. He was released until police could investigate further. A firearm was subsequently located by the Black Forest management. Saville has been taken into custody on charges of Carrying Concealed/Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Criminal Impersonation of a Peace Officer, Disorderly Conduct. Case 1513142
On August 5 at 12:54, an officer stopped a vehicle driving the wrong way, eastbound on W. 6th Avenue. He conducted a DUII investigation and arrested Connor Jon Springer, age 23, of Eugene for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants. He was also cited for driving the wrong way. Case 15-13190
August 4, around 3:30 a.m., a police officer on bike attempted to contact a subject for improper lighting near the Washington Jefferson skate park. When the officer announced himself, the subject accelerated north on Washington Street. The officer yelled commands for the subject to stop, but the subject continued to accelerate away from the officer toward Clark Street, however, the suspect was not able to negotiate the turn onto Clark Street, and crashed into the sidewalk on the north side of the street, fell off his bicycle and hit a wooden fence. The suspect then stood up and attempted to run, but was caught by the officer and placed under arrest. During contact with the suspect, Mykel Gregory Jacoby Black, age 29, of Eugene, the officer found that he was in possession of heroin. The suspect was transported to the Lane County Jail for Possession of a Controlled Substance – Heroin, Interfering with a Peace Officer – Disorderly Conduct, and two warrants. Black was also cited for Failure to Obey a Traffic Control Device, for not stopping at the stop sign at Washington and W. 1st Avenue.
August 3, at approximately 5:34 p.m., Police and Fire responded to the northbound Delta Highway off ramp at Goodpasture Island Rd. regarding a motor vehicle crash. When officers arrived, they observed a Chevrolet Cobalt engulfed in flames, with a portion of the grass in the median also on fire. Police contacted the driver and registered owner of the vehicle, William Earl Steiner, age 44, and found that he had been driving his vehicle at a high-rate of speed and failed to negotiate the exit onto Goodpature. He was cited for Careless Driving.
On August 2 at 12:49 a.m., police were dispatched to W. 6th and Lincoln, where witnesses reported a stabbing with the suspect still on scene and standing in the middle of the road. When they arrived, Jeremy William Leishman, age 30, of Eugene, was in the middle of Lincoln Street holding a knife. He was held at gunpoint and eventually complied after being admonished when told to get to his knees. He was taken into custody without incident. He was transported to Jail after declining medical attention for a cut above his eye. The incident was reported to have started when a group of friends was coming back from the Whiteaker Block Party and walking on W. 5th Avenue near Lawrence and Lincoln. As they walked, they came across Leishman and a female, Sophia Natalia Burke, age 29, of Eugene. Leishman and Burke were reported to have become verbally hostile toward the group. Burke is reported to have walked up to one of the group, a 32-year-old Eugene woman and punched her in the face. The group told the pair to leave them alone, then a 35-year-old Eugene male, who was in the group, tried to intervene between Leishman and another male member of the group and reports being stabbed by Leishman. The male was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Jeremy William Leishman, age 30, of Eugene, was arrested on charges of Assault in the First Degree, and Harassment. Burke was charged with Harassment.
On August 2 at about 12:15 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 7-Eleven at 590 East Broadway for a subject reported down. While enroute, dispatch told officers it was being reported that there was a Red, 1994 Ford Explorer with his engine running and the male driver, later identified as Ryan Christopher James, age 21, of Junction City, slumped over behind the wheel. Police were unable to wake him and called medics. Medics were able to wake him. He had heroin in his possession inside the vehicle. He was arrested for DUII and Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance Heroin.
On August 1, at 8:50 a.m., Police were dispatched to 3333 W. 11th Avenue (Fred Meyers) regarding a subject, later identified as Leslie Carroll Power, age 56, no address, who self-reported trying to rob Bob’s Donuts, 977 Garfield. Bob’s Donuts reported having an attempted robbery at about 7 a.m. in which Powers handed over a note threatening use of a weapon. When the shop’s owner told him ‘no,’ Powers reportedly left and headed westbound on W. 11th Avenue. Powers waited outside Fred Meyers for police to arrive and was taken into custody without incident and charged with Robbery in the Second Degree.
