[ARCHIVED] Police Investigate Theft Suspect's Death

Death Investigation

Case Number 16-00417

At 5:01 p.m. on January 9, police were called to respond to W. 11th Avenue after a 32-year-old male theft suspect, later identified as Perry Otto Charles Wilms, age 32, of Roseburg, ran from Fred Meyer loss prevention staff. The call details indicated he had been aggressive.

Eugene Police officers located Wilms on the bike path near Acorn Park. Wilms allowed officers to handcuff him without resisting and without officers having to use force. When officers helped him stand up he began exhibiting medical distress and medics were summoned. Eugene Springfield Fire EMS performed CPR but Wilms was declared deceased at 5:43 p.m.

Eugene Police Violent Crimes Unit and the Lane County Medical Examiner are conducting an investigation into the death.###
