[ARCHIVED] Two Speeding Vehicles Crash into Third Vehicle on W. 18th near Oak Patch

At 7:34 p.m. on April 7, a caller advised of two vehicles speed racing on W. 18th Avenue prior to crashing into a third vehicle. The speeding vehicles were: a black 1997 Volkswagon Jetta driven by Shawn Haynes, age 40, of Eugene; and a red 1996 Acura Integra driven by Amber Raeanne Puckett, 22, of Springfield. The third involved vehicle, was a 2010 Toyota Tacoma driven by Michael Patrick Walrath, 59, of Eugene.

After the crash, bystanders reported one of the drivers, later identified as Haynes, fled on foot. Due to evidence at the scene, he appeared to be injured. He was last seen running southbound on foot. An officer searching for Haynes spotted a blue 2005 Toyota Sequoia driving in the area near Todd Street, pulling into a driveway, then pulling out and appearing indecisive about travel direction. The officer became interested in the SUV and as the vehicle turned onto W. 18th, the officer spotted Haynes in the passenger seat and initiated a traffic stop on W. 18th near Greiner Street. Haynes got out of the SUV and had obvious injuries, and the officer also detected possible signs of intoxication. After an investigation, it was determined Haynes and Puckett, had been speed racing westbound on W. 18th Avenue. Haynes was driving in the turn lane and Puckett’s vehicle was in the westbound lane. When they entered the s-curve toward Oak Patch, Haynes lost control of his vehicle and entered the oncoming lane, and crashed into Walrath’s Tacoma. The Tacoma was redirected by the impact into Puckett’s vehicle.

• Puckett was issued a citation in lieu of custody for Reckless Driving.

• Haynes was arrested for DUII, Hit and Run, Reckless Driving.
