[ARCHIVED] Suspect Arrested in downtown shooting

Just after 7 p.m. on June 23, two sets of men began fighting in front of the Eugene Library. The men were apparently members of opposing gang sets, and a shot was fired in the direction of the library during two simultaneous fistfights; hitting only a lower window in the café area. All subjects involved in the fight left on foot as EPD units flooded the area, and passers-by moved to safety. The presumed shooter was located leaving the area, and a gun was recovered near the scene. The suspect arrested is identified as Randy Dean Cook, age 33. He’s been charged with Attempted Assault in the First Degree, Felon in Possession of a Weapon, and Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamines. If anyone has further information in the case, they are asked to contact Detective Burroughs at (541) 682-5868.

In an unrelated but simultaneous incident, a single-vehicle had driven over a Eugene street tree and into the LCC downtown building just feet from the shooting. Officers investigated the crash, and the lone female driver was arrested for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (Alcohol.)

Students and staff from LCC were very helpful to officers investigating both of these chaotic scenes, and EPD thanks those who stepped up as witnesses to each event. Case No. 16-10389
