[ARCHIVED] Dashiell Hammett Biographers

On Saturday, March 4, 2:00 p.m., the Downtown Eugene Public Library will host a free talk by Julie M. Rivett titled "An Un-Reasonable Amount of Trouble: The Tangled Tale of Hammett, Hellman, and McCarthy." Dashiell Hammett is remembered both for his contributions to hard-boiled crime fiction and for his stand against McCarthyism. Rivett will talk about his experiences as a communist activist and the far-reaching repercussions on his life, legacy, and literary estate. Rivett is Hammett's granddaughter and an expert on his work.

On Sunday, Marchy 5, 2:00 p.m., at the Downtown Library, Julie M. Rivett and biographer Richard Layman will discuss their discoveries in decades of private and professional research on Dashiell Hammett and “The Maltese Falcon.” Learn about the author, his writings, and his literary legacy from today’s foremost team of Hammett scholars.

These free events are part of the NEA Big Read: a community celebration of Dashiell Hammett’s classic noir novel “The Maltese Falcon.” Events will include performances, talks, films, and more at Eugene Public Library and in the community. NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, co-sponsored locally by Eugene Public Library, Springfield Public Library, Oregon Contemporary Theatre, Friends of Eugene Public Library, and Eugene Public Library Foundation.
