[ARCHIVED] EPD on the Beat - June 2017

On June 28, EPD responded to 274 calls for service and made 29 arrests. The average number of calls for service over the last seven days is 292 and the average number of arrests over the last seven days is 30. The number of calls for service on this day last year was 322, and the number of arrests was 25. Over the last three years, the average number of calls for service received on June 28 is 263, and the average number of arrests, 27.

Assault/Disorderly Conduct – Case 1710607

Police responded to the area regarding a physical dispute and received information that the dispute escalated when the 41-year-old male victim attempted to separate his dog from being bitten by another dog that was off leash, and the owner of the dog, Justin Malachi Durham, age 43, of Eugene, was subsequently observed striking the victim multiple times. Police contacted Durham and arrested him for Assault and Disorderly Conduct. The victim and a bystander who helped separate the dogs were treated by medics for injuries sustained from Durham’s Pit Bull, which was transported to First Avenue Shelter by an Animal Welfare Officer.

Criminal Mischief 3 – Case 1710526

Police were flagged down regarding a male subject who had left southbound on the sidewalk after placing marijuana paraphernalia on a police vehicle in open view of the public. Police located and contacted the suspect, Breige Anthony Keber, age 19, of Eugene, near the east side of the library and cited him in lieu of custody for Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree.

Disorderly Conduct – Case 1710466

Police responded to the area around 4 a.m. regarding multiple calls for Fireworks and Shots Fired and found the source of the information to be the use of illegal fireworks. Police contacted the involved subjects, and cited them in lieu of custody for Disorderly Conduct.


On June 26, EPD responded to 292 calls for service and made 29 arrests. The average number of calls for service over the last seven days is 288 and the average number of arrests over the last seven days is 26. The number of calls for service on this day last year was 256, and the number of arrests was 24. Assault 2 – Case 1710458

Officers were sent to the parking lot at 2700 Hilyard after report of an assault. A woman, age 40, reported she was in the parking lot with friends and her husband, when she decided to walk her dog to the skate park. As the woman was walking with her dog, another woman she did not know began yelling at the victim, possibly about the victim’s dog and the other woman’s dog. A man, later identified as Alan Bailey Landes, age 74, is reported to have pushed the victim to the ground and then when she got up, cut her with a knife. She had non life threatening injuries. The other woman left the area and Landes left in a van. An officer found the involved van parked at 24th and University and contacted Landes. After investigating, Landes was charged with Assault 2.

Forgery 1, Resisting Arrest, Escape 2 – Case 1710419

An officer responded to a forgery in progress at the US Bank. A man was trying to cash a check that was not his to cash. As he walked in, he spotted the suspect, later identified as Adam Morales Sanborn, age 23, of Eugene. The officer went to detain Sanborn and got one handcuff on, but Sanborn stood up and headed to the front door and was able to break loose from the officer. Another officer attempted to intervene and both gave chase to Sanborn, who ran into Café Yumm at 18th and Willamette. A UOPD officer came to assist and they found Sanborn at a nearby porch and he was taken into custody. He was charged with Forgery 1, Resisting Arrest, Escape 2.

On June 25, EPD responded to 279 calls for service and made 18 arrests. The average number of calls for service over the last seven days is 284 and the average number of arrests over the last seven days is 27. The number of calls for service on this day last year was 242, and the number of arrests was 24. Over the last three years, the average number of calls for service received on June 25 is 236, and the average number of arrests, 29. 

 

Last week (Sunday, June 18 – Saturday June 24) EPD responded to 1,991 calls for service and made 186 arrests. The average number of calls for service over the last four weeks is 2,074 with 208 arrests. The number of calls for service during the same week last year was 1,909 with 225 arrests. Over the last three years, the average number of calls for service for this period was 1,681 and there were 209 arrests.

 

06/23/17 23:27, 3998 W 1ST AVE/S BERTELSEN RD

Felon in Possession of Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Firearm, Possession of Methamphetamine, DUII (CNS Stimulant), Reckless Driving, Resisting Arrest, Warrant – Case 1710288

An officer was patrolling the area and observed a suspect with a warrant in an Acura Integra in the parking lot of Albertson’s Grocery store on Royal Avenue. The suspect in the Acura left the parking lot and drove onto North Danebo, and the officer observed the suspect driving inconsistently and weaving and fail to maintain a lane. The officer performed a traffic stop. The suspect, Matthew Anthony Ray Whipps-Hicks, age 27, of Eugene, was slow to respond to commands and then resisted arrest for DUII. After the arrest, the officer located a handgun in the vehicle within easy reach by the driver, along with ammunition. Whipps-Hicks was charged with DUII, Reckless Driving, Resisting Arrest, Possession of Methamphetamine, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, and six warrants.

Reckless Endangering – Case 1710398

A 37-year-old woman and her 13-year-old daughter were driving in the area when they entered an intersection and the 13-year-old was struck in the face with an object through her open, passenger-side window. The pair had been behind the suspect’s Honda Civic, stopped at a red light. When the light turned green, the suspect, Michael Ray Panko, age 37, of Springfield, is reported to have driven very slowly and the woman honked her horn and made arm gestures. The woman drove around Panko’s car and as she passed it, and they passed, the girl got hit in the face. The woman called 911 and officers responded to Panko’s residence. He was charged with Reckless Endangering.

Inhale Toxic Vapors – Case 1710378

Bystanders reported a man passed out in the driver’s seat of a vehicle, possible after inhaling toxic vapors (huffing). When officers got there, later identified as Nathaniel Lewis Krauss, age 30, of Eugene, was not responsive. They woke him up and he appeared disoriented. He was charged with Inhaling Toxic Vapors.

DUII, Reckless Driving – Case 1710345

An officer was sent to a crash to investigate a possibly intoxicated driver. Upon arrival, the officer found that a vehicle driven by Craig A Hopkins, age 45, of Eugene, had rear-ended another vehicle that was stopped at a red light. The officer suspected impairment and after an investigation, charged Hopkins with DUII and Reckless Driving.

Reckless Burning, Possession of Heroin, Disorderly Conduct 2 – Case 1710351

An officer was sent to report of a disorderly man throwing trash, lighting items on fire and stopping traffic. When he got there, he found the suspect, Jared Patrick Brooks, age 27, of Eugene. After investigating, he took Brooks into custody and found that he was in Possession of Heroin. Brooks was charged with Reckless Burning, Possession of Heroin, and Disorderly Conduct 2.

Improper Use of Emergency Phone – Case 1710332

A lieutenant on patrol tried to stop a man for disorderly conduct, who then fled on foot from Washington Jefferson Park. The man, Sean Diamond Mulroy, age 27, had pressed the emergency call box in the middle of Washington Jefferson Park and then run when the lieutenant on duty tried to contact him. Other officers arrived and one caught up to Mulroy. Mulroy began running back and forth between the lanes of travel on Jefferson Street, then squared off with the officer. Mulroy did comply with orders to get on the ground and was detained. Mulroy was charged with Improper Use of 911, Disorderly Conduct, Interfering with Police, and Violation of Park Rules.

06/24/17 00:20, 2800 Block W 18TH AVE/OAK PATCH RD

DUII, Hit and Run – Case 1710292

An officer was sent to a single-vehicle crash, with the driver, later identified as Phillip Michael Queener, age 30, of Cottage Grove, last seen running eastbound on W. 18th Avenue from the crash scene. When the officer arrived, he found that Queener’s Toyota Corolla had been travelling at what appeared to bystanders to be a high rate of speed. He was unable to negotiate a curve, crossed into the oncoming lane and struck a retaining wall. Officers found Queener on Hawkins Street south of W. 18th Avenue. The officer suspected impairment and after an investigation, Queener was charged with DUII and Hit and Run.

On June 20, EPD responded to 296 calls for service and made 25 arrests. The average number of calls for service over the last seven days is 289 and the average number of arrests over the last seven days is 31. The number of calls for service on this day last year was 287, and the number of arrests was 23. Over the last three years, the average number of calls for service received on June 20 is 233, and the average number of arrests, 29.

Theft 1, Criminal Mischief 2 – Case 1710044

Sprint Kiosk called regarding cell phones that had been stolen from the store’s display. A suspect, later identified as Jerson Noel Rodriguez Recinos, age 23, of Eugene, had pried the phones from the display, damaging the display. Sprint and detectives were able to track Rodrigues Recinos down at a McDonald’s on W. 11th and Seneca, where he was arrested and charged with Theft 1 and Criminal Mischief. Another suspect was tracked and located on a bike near W. 13th Avenue and Ocean Street. The suspect, Johnathan Allen Leaman, age 25, of Eugene, was charged with Theft 1 Receiving. Phones were recovered in both arrests.

Hit and Run – Case 1709051

An officer was called after a hit and run was reported. The suspect, Nathaniel Lewis Krauss, age 30, of Eugene, was reported to be in a vehicle at the location sleeping and there was an aerosol can inside the vehicle. A bystander tried to wake Krauss and he awoke suddenly and accelerated in reverse, striking a parked car. He became angry at the bystander and then left headed north on Tyinn. On June 20, at around 8:39 p.m., officers were sent to 60 Division Avenue after report of a person huffing. Officers arrived and found Krauss. He was charged with Hit and Run and Inhale Toxic Vapors.

06/20/17 18:51, 1500 W 5TH AVE/ALMADEN ST

Harassment x 3, Menacing, Disorderly Conduct II, Interfering with a Police Officer, PCS-Methamphetamine – Case 1710081

Police were called to Plaza Latina Supermarket for report of a disorderly man, later identified as

Aaron Allen Harney, age 27, of Bend. It was reported that Harney had become angry after being told to use a different line for his purchase, used racial slurs at the employees, and then assaulted a group of five males who followed him out of the store. As police arrived, bystanders pointed out Harney and officers attempted to contact him. Harney ignored directions and continued to walk away. A taser was used to help take Harney into custody. He was found to be in possession of meth. He was charged with three counts of Harassment, Menacing, Disorderly Conduct 2, Interfering with a Police Officer, and Possession of Methamphetamine.


On June 15, EPD responded to 288 calls for service and made 29 arrests. The average number of calls for service over the last seven days is 279 and the average number of arrests over the last seven days is 29. The number of calls for service on this day last year was 280, and the number of arrests was 28. Over the last three years, the average number of calls for service received on June 15 is 249, and the average number of arrests, 22.

Criminal Mischief 3/Deliver Methamphetamine/Resisting Arrest – Case 1709745

Police responded to the Starbucks at the location regarding a trespasser who refused to leave the restroom and was heard screaming, slamming items and causing a disruption to business. When police arrived, officers contacted the suspect, Matthew McCart Brown, age 29, of Eugene, and observed the room littered with paper towels and damage to a metal trash can. During contact with Brown, he struggled with police and was eventually arrested for Resisting Arrest, Possession of Methamphetamine, Deliver Methamphetamine, Possession of Oxycodone, Deliver Oxycodone, Possession of Cocaine, Deliver Cocaine, Disorderly Conduct in the Second Degree, Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree. He was transported to the Lane County Jail.

Menacing/Disorderly Conduct – Case 1709679

Police responded to an apartment on Cleveland Street regarding a male subject who caused alarm when he pointed a replica gun at another male subject. Police contacted the subject, Garen Daniel Theis, age 49, of Eugene, who was observed on the property when the officer arrived and behaving aggressively toward the officer. The officer found him in possession of the gun and arrested him for Menacing and Disorderly Conduct. He was transported to the Lane County Jail.

Forgery/Warrant – Case 1709670

Police responded to Wells Fargo Bank regarding a female subject who tried to cash a stolen check, and observed the described subject, Anastasjia Sarah Maria Blankenship, age 26, of Eugene, exiting the front doors of the bank and contacted her regarding the incident. After further investigation, she was arrested and transported to the Lane County Jail for Forgery in the Second Degree and a warrant.


On June 13, EPD responded to 289 calls for service and made 23 arrests. The average number of calls for service over the last seven days is 289 and the average number of arrests over the last seven days is 26. The number of calls for service on this day last year was 278, and the number of arrests was 26. Over the last three years, the average number of calls for service received on June 13 is 245, and the average number of arrests, 32.

DUII/Reckless Driving – Case 1709611

Police responded to the location regarding a possible DUII driver, and located the described 2004 Ford Mustang traveling at night without the headlights activated. The officer conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle and contacted the driver after observing the Mustang nearly strike a metal gate. After further investigation, the driver, Randall Scott Stapleton, age 62, was arrested and transported to the Lane County Jail for DUII and Reckless Driving.

Hit and Run–Vehicle Damage – Case 1709563

Police received multiple calls regarding a white Cadillac that was observed traveling in and out of the lane, nearly struck the barrier and eventually struck the side of a van that was traveling in the same direction. The driver subsequently continued in the same direction without pulling over and was last observed traveling south on Delta Highway. Police contacted the driver of the described vehicle, Anna Rossivonriedkirch, age 90, of Eugene, at a residence on the 1200 block of Alfaretta Drive regarding the incident and cited her for Hit and Run.  

 

06/12/17 20:00, 1200 BLOCK OF BUTTE LN

Burglary 1/Warrants (Case 1709547), Burglary 1/Theft 3 (Case 1615702)

Police responded to a residence at the location regarding a burglary in progress and a male subject who was observed inside a camper at the location. The subject, Sean Michael Kinch, age 27, of Eugene, was held at the location by the residents until police arrived and contacted him regarding the incident and found information that he had entered multiple vehicles on the property. He was arrested on two counts of Burglary in the First Degree and three warrants, and transported to the Lane County Jail (Case 1709547). Police responded to the Lane County Jail following the arrest of Kinch, and contacted him regarding a burglary on the 1100 block of Backlund that happened on September 19, 2016 (Case 1615702), and police received information of several items that were stolen from the location. Following contact with Backlund, he received additional charges for Burglary in the First Degree and Theft in the Third Degree.


Last week (Sunday, June 4 – Saturday, June 10) EPD responded to 2,021 calls for service and made 179 arrests. The average number of calls for service over the last four weeks is 2,025 with 196 arrests. The number of calls for service during the same week last year was 1,941 with 214 arrests. Over the last three years, the average number of calls for service for this period was 1,787 and there were 217 arrests.



On June 8, EPD responded to 282 calls for service and made 23 arrests. The average number of calls for service over the last seven days is 309 and the average number of arrests over the last seven days is 25. The number of calls for service on this day last year was 293, and the number of arrests was 39. Over the last three years, the average number of calls for service received on June 8 is 246, and the average number of arrests, 40.

Robbery/Unlawful Use of a Weapon – Case 1709301/1703902

We responded to the 500 block area of E. Broadway this morning at approximately 2:31 a.m. regarding a robbery, and a suspect that left with the 28-year-old male victim’s bike, who is known to the suspect. K9 officers located the suspect, William John Amos, age 44, of Eugene, who jumped into the Willamette River and was apprehended by police who were assisted on boat by Eugene Springfield Fire. Officers recovered the stolen bike, and following contact with Amos, he was evaluated by medics, arrested and transported to the Lane County Jail Robbery in the Second Degree, Interfering With Police, Possession of Meth, Possession of Heroin and Felon In Possession of a Restricted Weapon. A female subject, Kristina Loveda Powell, age 31, who was with Amos was also contacted. Following contact with Powell, she was arrested and transported to the Lane County Jail for Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Heroin and three warrants.

Criminal Mischief 2/DUII/Reckless Driving – Case 1709300

Police responded to a single vehicle crash on Valley River Drive involving a silver Ford Focus that struck a store sign in front of the business. Fire personnel assisted the driver from the vehicle and he was transported to the hospital for evaluation. Following contact with police, the driver, Jonah James Scott, age 22, of Eugene, was arrested for DUII, Reckless Driving and Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree.

DUII/Reckless Driving – Case 1709295

Police responded to a single vehicle crash on Praslin Street involving a blue sedan that crashed into a tree and the driver was observed yelling at people in the area and behaving aggressively. Police observed significant front end damage to the vehicle and contacted the driver at the location, Clayton James Collins, age 22, of Eugene. After further investigation, he was arrested and transported to the Lane County Jail for DUII and Reckless Driving.

Disorderly Conduct/Criminal Trespass 2 – Case 1709245

Police responded to St. Mary’s Catholic Church regarding a disorderly trespasser who was banging on the door and yelling at people inside the location. Police contacted the described subject, Christopher Leonard Johnson, age 32, of Eugene, at the location and received information that he had attempted to pull the glass door open and his behavior appeared increasingly agitated. Following contact with Johnson, he was arrested and transported to the Lane County Jail for Disorderly Conduct and Criminal Trespass in the Second Degree.

 

06/08/17 00:00, 1255 HILYARD ST

Disorderly Conduct/Criminal Trespass 2 – Case 1709221

Police responded to the hospital regarding a disorderly subject who had attempted to enter an ambulance parked in the loading/unloading zone and yelled at people in the lobby. Police contacted the subject, Kevin Douglas Brown, age 33, and received information that he had refused to leave the location after being offered services. He was arrested for Disorderly Conduct and Criminal Trespass in the Second Degree and transported to the Lane County Jail.

Harassment/Possession of Methamphetamine – Case 1709215

Police responded to a dispute at the Side Pocket Tavern involving three subjects and received information of a male and female subject who aggressed an employee after they were told to leave. Police contacted the involved subjects at the location, and arrested Christopher Salvador Menjivar, age 31, of Eugene, and Sheiz Paztine Spencer, age 33, of Eugene, for Harassment. Menjivar received an additional charge for Possession of Methamphetamine.


On June 6, EPD responded to 334 calls for service and made 26 arrests. The average number of calls for service over the last seven days is 310 and the average number of arrests over the last seven days is 27. The number of calls for service on this day last year was 304, and the number of arrests was 17. Over the last three years, the average number of calls for service received on June 6 is 276, and the average number of arrests, 34.

Possession of Stolen Vehicle, Elude by Foot – Case 1709167

Police were dispatched to Jackson’s Market after a stolen Toyota Tacoma was reported at the location. A friend of the victim had noticed the vehicle and called police. A man, later identified as William Edward Scott, age 43, got into the truck and started to leave. An officer got there as the truck was leaving the parking lot. After driving a short way, it pulled into the Taco Bell parking lot and the officer performed a traffic stop. Scott got out and ran toward and apartment complex, getting onto the second floor balcony before being taken into custody. Meanwhile, another another officer, who had stayed with the vehicle, detained the passenger, Sundharia Hummingbird Lifesong, age 21. Both were charged with Unauthorized Use of Vehicle and Possession of Stolen Vehicle. Scott was additionally charged with Elude by Foot.

Reckless Burning – Case 1709162

Eugene Springfield Fire called police after a man set a fire across from the fire station on W. 2nd Avenue in Eugene, and was standing next to it throwing papers on it. ESF firefighters had contacted the man and he walked off. The firefighters put the fire out. Police arrived and found Travis Dale Wise, 42, who was detained and then charged with Reckless Burning.

Interfering with Police, Warrant – Case 1709157

Police were called after patrons of a salon became uncomfortable with a man who was holding a knife with the blade out. Officers arrived and contacted the man, later identified as Jerson Noel Rodrigues-Recinos. While a sergeant was talking with him, the sergeant aske dRodrigues-Recinos to show his hands in both English and Spanish. He refused. As officers approached him, Rodrigues-Recinos stood up and ran. Officers pursued him on foot and saw him drop his hand toward his pocket. Rodrigues-Recinos was advised that he needed to stop or a taser would be deployed. Rodrigues-Recinos continued to flee and the taser was deployed, which stopped him. While on the ground Rodrigues-Recinos continued to reach for his pocket. Officers had to struggled to secure Rodrigues-Recinos in handcuffs. He refused to provide his name. After he was booked into jail he was identified and officer found he had warrants for Failure to Appear on charges of Interfering and Theft 3. He was charged with Interfering with Police.

Hit and Run – Case 1709140

On May 23, a 22-year-old Eugene woman was driving her Toyota Corolla southbound on Willamette and was stopped at a red light near Capella’s Market when a white Honda CRV hit her from behind. The driver of the Honda stuck her hand out to the left so the victim turned into Capella’s parking lot to exchange information. However, the Honda’s driver left. An officer investigated and developed information that indicated Destiny Ann Pugh, age 19, of Eugene, had been the driver. Pugh was cited for Hit and Run.

Criminal Trespass 2 – Case 1709079

An officer was sent to Buy 2 after a trespasser, later idenitifed as Gregory Kuntz, was knocking on the outside of the window and began to lick it. Kuntz was told to stop and leave, and did. However Kuntz had previously been told not to visit the premises due to disorderly behavior. An officer followed up and contacted Kuntz, who was cited for Criminal Trespass.

Use of Marijuana Public Place – Case 1709114

A police officer on foot patrol contacted a male subject in front of the Subway restaurant regarding marijuana, and found information to cite Clayton Maxwell Brown, age 40, in lieu of custody for Use of Marijuana in Public Place.

Possession of Methamphetamine/DUII – Case 1709109

Police responded to the McDonald’s restaurant on River Road regarding a gray Ford Ranger in the drive thru, and a driver who was slumped over behind the steering wheel with her eyes closed. When police arrived, they observed the driver, Chelsey Lee Tennant, age 19, of Eugene, who was in the vehicle with the engine running and contacted her at the location. Following further investigation, police found information to arrest Tennant for DUII and Possession of Methamphetamine.

Felon in Possession of a Restricted Weapon/Possession of Heroin – Case 

A police officer on patrol contacted a male subject after he was observed walking into Starbucks with a restricted weapon on his person. The officer contacted the subject regarding the bladed object and found information to arrest him for Possession of Heroin and Felon In Possession of a Restricted Weapon.



On June 5, EPD responded to 291 calls for service and made 24 arrests. The average number of calls for service over the last seven days is 303 and the average number of arrests over the last seven days is 25. The number of calls for service on this day last year was 254, and the number of arrests was 18. Over the last three years, the average number of calls for service received on June 5 is 270, and the average number of arrests, 25.

Harassment/Unlawful Entry Motor Vehicle – Case 1709105

Police responded to a residence at the location regarding a male subject who was observed inside a vehicle at the location. Police received information that the victim contacted the subject, Alejandro Mendoza Morales, age 18, of Eugene, and a second subject, Christian Manuel Morales Mendoza, age 19, of Eugene, subsequently jumped on the victim’s back. When officers arrived to the area, they located the described subjects and contacted them regarding the incident. Police responded to the 4900 block of Barger Drive regarding a male subject who was spray painting the building. Police contacted the subject, Justin Michael Bendix, age 26, of Eugene, and found information to arrest him for Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Burglary Tools, Felon In Possession of a Restricted Weapon, Criminal Trespass in the Second Degree, Possession of Heroin and three warrants. He was transported to the Lane County Jail on the charges.

Menacing/Unlawful Use of a Weapon/Felon in Possession Restricted Weapon/Warrant – Case 1709095

Police responded to the area regarding separate incidents of victims who were threatened by a male subject on bike who was carrying a knife. Police located the described subject, Benjamin David Phillips, age 34, of Eugene, on the 600 block of Seneca Road and contacted him regarding the incident. He was found him in possession of multiple weapons and a warrant. Phillips was arrested and transported to the Lane County Jail for Menacing, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Felon in Possession of a Restricted Weapon and a warrant.

Hit and Run – Case 1709025

Police responded to the area regarding a black Honda Civic that crashed into a trailer that was parked across from the DMV. When police arrived, officers observed front end damage to the Honda and a broken windshield, and damage to the left side of the trailer and a rear axle that was completely destroyed. Police received information that a male subject was observed running from the location. The described subject, Juan Carlos Guitron-Rodriguez, age 33, of Eugene, was located by police in the alley behind the Jalisco restaurant and contacted regarding the incident. He was evaluated by medics for minor injuries and arrested for Hit and Run.

Harassment – Case 1709024

Police responded to a residence at the location regarding a dispute between roommates. When officers arrived, they contacted the involved male subjects and received information that the suspect, Canyon Amarys, age 19, continued to push and grab the 22-year-old male victim after being told to stop. Police arrested Amarys for Harassment and transported to the Lane County Jail.

DUII/Reckless Endangering/Reckless Driving – Case 1709106

Police responded to a residence regarding a dispute and observed a 2017 Hyundai Sonota that had backed over a tree and was wedged in an unsafe position on a steep driveway. The officer contacted the driver of the vehicle, Darklis Marie Keyes, age 46, of Portland, and received information that she had crashed the vehicle while leaving the residence. After further investigation, she was arrested for DUII, Reckless Driving and Reckless Endangering.


On June 4, EPD responded to 249 calls for service and made 14 arrests. The average number of calls for service over the last seven days is 302 and the average number of arrests over the last seven days is 27. The number of calls for service on this day last year was 315, and the number of arrests was 29. Over the last three years, the average number of calls for service received on June 4 is 273, and the average number of arrests, 32. 

 

Last week (Sunday, May 28 – Saturday, June 3) EPD responded to 2,116 calls for service and made 188 arrests. The average number of calls for service over the last four weeks is 1,995 with 196 arrests. The number of calls for service during the same week last year was 1,730 with 226 arrests. Over the last three years, the average number of calls for service for this period was 1,638 and there were 234 arrests.

DUII – Case 1709028

An officer responded to Max’s Tavern for a non-injury motor vehicle crash in which the driver was believed to be intoxicated. The officer made contact with the driver, Christopher Robert Calestini, age 28, of Eugene, who had crashed his van into a parked car that was not occupied. The officer suspected impairment and after an investigation, Calestini was charged with DUII.

Interfere with Police Officer – Case 1709026

Officers were called to Brun’s Red Apple Market as there was a Ford Explorer in the lot after the business was closed. The tow truck driver had found two people sleeping inside and they would not respond. When the officers got there, they could see a man and woman inside and they appeared to be unconscious. They knocked on the window and roused the man, age 24, who immediately became hostile and didn’t want to identify himself. The woman, Janina Sultana Sanders, age 21, of Pleasant Hill, was in the driver’s seat, appeared intoxicated and refused to open her door or roll down the window. She became angry and began punching her window and refused to come out. There was a knife impaled in the door inside and the officer was concerned Sanders might drive away as she started to roll her window up and grab the keys in the ignition. The officer tried to stop her rolling up her window and she began to punch and kick at the officer’s hand. She didn’t comply and after being warned, was subject to OC spray, but spray, but she still refused to come out and the officer had to break the window and drag her out. She was charged with Interfering with Police and the man was warned for trespassing.

DUII/Reckless Driving – Case 1708947

Police responded to the area following multiple calls regarding a possible DUII driver who was driving erratically in an area of high traffic. Police located the described red 2002 GMC Yukon traveling west on W. 6th Avenue at a high rate of speed, and observed the vehicle come to a stop at Chambers Street with both driver side tires resting on the left side of the dashed line. The officer contacted the driver of the vehicle, Jesse Ray Taft, age 36, of Eugene, and after further investigation, he was arrested for DUII and Reckless Driving. The officer also found information to cite Taft for Violation Of Open Container Law and Violation of Speed Limit.

Public Indecency Misdemeanor – Case 1708938

Police officers were on foot patrol in the downtown area when they observed a male subject who had exposed himself in a public area that was visible from the sidewalk and Oak Street. Following contact with the subject, Randy Steven Upmeyer, age 51, of Eugene, he was arrested for Public Indecency Misdemeanor and six warrants. He was transported to the Lane County Jail.

Criminal Mischief 3/Criminal Trespass 2 – Case 1708932

Police responded to a residence on Buck Street regarding a disorderly female trespasser who had pulled the rain gutter spout down from the house and displaced multiple items belonging to the residence. When police arrived, they contacted the subject, Bonnie Jean White, age 39, who was in the middle of the roadway, and arrested her for Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree and Criminal Trespass in the Second Degree.

Police responded to the railroad tracks regarding a disorderly trespasser who refused to leave and yelled at a railroad employee. Police contacted the subject, Damian Steven Swinney, age 37, of Eugene, at the location, and arrested him for Criminal Trespass in the First Degree and transported him to the Lane County Jail.

Robbery 1 – Case 1708747

Police responded to the jail and contacted Nisha Mullins, age 38, of Eugene, who was at the jail on unrelated charges. Mullins was contacted regarding a robbery that occurred on May 31 at approximately 12:25 p.m. in the 100 block of River Avenue. Police received information that she assaulted a 36-year-old female victim who was known to her and left the area with the victim’s backpack. Following contact with Mullins, she was charged with Robbery in the First Degree.

Criminal Mischief 2/DUII/Reckless Endangering/Reckless Driving – Case 1708854

Police responded to a non injury single vehicle crash near the intersection of 12th Avenue and Charnelton and observed a black 2005 Chevy Equinox with significant front and passenger side damage resting between two trees, and a street sign that had been broken and displaced more than 50 feet from its original position, and damage to the sidewalk. Police received information that the driver was attempting to make the turn onto 12th Avenue when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the sign and sidewalk. Police contacted the driver, Blake Barton Vaughn, age 21, of Eugene, and after further investigation, he was arrested for Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree, DUII, Reckless Endangering and Reckless Driving.

Possession of Methamphetamine/Resisting Arrest/Warrant – 1708802

Police patrolling on bike at the north end of Owen’s Rose Garden contacted three subjects, Katherine Lynn Healam, age 22, of Eugene, Valek Renn Thrasher, age 24, of Eugene, and David Earl Sheldon, age 31, of Eugene, regarding illegal drugs and arrested all three subjects for Possession of Methamphetamine. During the arrest, Sheldon attempted to leave the location and continued to struggle and disregard direction from the officers. He was eventually taken into custody with the use of a taser and received additional charges for Resisting Arrest and a warrant. All three subject were transported to the Lane County Jail.
