[ARCHIVED] Officers Rescue Duck In Distress

On Sunday, June 11, 2017, at about 8:55 hours, Eugene Police were called to assist a duck in distress at Alton Baker Park Canoe Canal. EPD Officers on-scene discovered a mallard hen with her beak snagged on a fishing hook and line, and struggling against a branch the line was tangled in. As they sought a creative way to assist the tiring duck damsel, it was apparent that the depth of the canal and length of the branch posed safety challenges to the officers. Utilizing an EPD officer’s personal fishing equipment, and a lifejacket, officers were able to safely untangle and capture the duck to remove the hook and set her free.
