[ARCHIVED] Scientists and Conservationists from Mexico Visit Delta Ponds

AltTextThis month Eugene welcomed a team from the Laja River basin in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico, who came to learn more about how our community works together to protect and enhance local waterways.

As part of their weeklong visit to the Willamette Valley, they toured several sites including Delta Ponds. With mining challenges back in their own communities, the visit showcased how a former gravel mine can be transformed into a thriving natural area. Rivers to Ridges partners from the City of Eugene Parks and Open Space Division, Willamalane Parks and Recreation District, the Long Tom Watershed Council, and The Nature Conservancy also shared lessons learned about forming a lasting partnership and implementing other on-the-ground projects.

The visit was part of the International River Foundation’s Twinning Program which fosters long-term, peer-to-peer relationships between organizations and communities at the local level. All are hopeful this will be the beginning of a fruitful knowledge exchange between the two countries. Many thanks to the Meyer Memorial Trust for coordinating the visit.
