[ARCHIVED] Coming Soon: Downtown Safety Improvements

Exciting changes are coming to downtown Eugene this summer, including improvements to infrastructure and public safety. Starting the week of June 25, Public Works will implement a number of changes to Oak Street between 10th and 8th avenues using an innovative rapid implementation process which enables staff to make changes quickly and at lower costs by using a mix of permanent and temporary materials. The work is intended to make the area in and around the Park Blocks safer and is consistent with Vision Zero, the goal of eliminating all traffic-related deaths or serious injuries.

Plans call for improving safety for people crossing Oak Street at Park Street by extending curbs to shorten the crossing distance and marking the crosswalk. The work, weather dependent, will also eliminate one of the two left turn lanes from Oak Street onto 8th Avenue making it safer for folks crossing 8th Avenue along the west side of Oak Street. The increased safety is important as thousands of people cross Oak Street from the East to the West Park Blocks on Saturdays during market season, not to mention the rest of the week.

The reconfigured Oak Street would also create new metered on-street parking between Broadway and 8th Avenue. Additional bicycle parking will be provided in portions of the extend curb space.
