[ARCHIVED] September is Emergency Preparedness Month

The City of Eugene Emergency Management Program is offering a series of educational events and activities throughout September to help community members prepare for disasters or emergencies.

During last year’s ice storm more than 20,000 EWEB customers lost power. People in the community affected by the storm learned quickly how critical personal preparedness is to their comfort and survival. Being prepared means you can support yourself and your household for up to two weeks in the absence of electricity, water service, supermarket access, and first responders.

This year’s events include a vendor fair with opportunities learn about personal preparedness, examine and discuss contents of emergency kits, and get help mapping your neighborhood.

“We learned a lot about preparedness last winter with the ice storm,” said Patence Winningham, Emergency Management Program Coordinator. “Individuals can stop by the vendor fair to learn about equipment and supplies that may be used during a disaster, while the speaking engagements offer tips for getting your household and family prepared for disasters.”

Northwest Natural is hosting Get Ready Eugene on September 16 at the East Parking lot of Autzen Stadium. People will have access to several local emergency groups to learn how to prepare themselves and their households, as well as have a chance to win a free preparedness item. Lunch is provided and the event has no charge.
