The event will feature actors portraying Mary and Eugene Skinner, a Kalapuya story teller, and early explorer Joe Meek. The Old Time Fiddlers will perform and the Emmaus Lutheran Quilt Makers will present a Eugene@150 quilt to Mayor Kitty Piercy.
The postcard has the Eugene@150 logo on the front. The image on the cancellation stamp is a drawing of Eugene Skinner's original cabin. Eugene Postmaster Paul Bastinelli will affix the cancellation stamp on the postcards at the event. Ray Wiley, a long time volunteer and preservationist of Skinner Butte, will have the honor of receiving the first Eugene@150 postcard imprinted with the unique cancellation stamp.
The actors will tell stories of their life and times in the Willamette Valley in the mid-1800s. Dressed as early explorer Joe Meek, the Lane County Historical Museum Director Bob Hart will MC the event. Eugene Skinner (Bill Sullivan) will read from a letter sent to his sister as Mary Skinner (Kim Donahey) reacts. Esther Stutzman, a native American and a Kalapuya story teller, will talk about the importance of the Kalapuyas in Eugene's history.
Three women from the Emmaus Lutheran Church are celebrating Eugene's 150th Birthday by making a quilt showing moments in time that represent Eugene over the past 150 years. Using old photos of Eugene given to them from the Lane Historical Society, the women have created images of a train, a slug, Tracktown USA and more. The quilt will be on display at the Oct. 17 event before it is presented to Mayor Piercy.
