[ARCHIVED] City of Eugene Purchases Riverfront Parkland in Santa Clara

Backchannel of the Willamette River, near the confluence of the Willamette and McKenzie RiversThe City of Eugene has purchased 7.3 acres of land in Santa Clara from Cascade Health Solutions. The newest addition to the Eugene Parks and Open Space System is just north of Santa Clara Community Park, off River Loop 1. The land features a beautiful 1,000-foot stretch of land along a backchannel of the Willamette River, very close to the confluence of the Willamette and McKenzie Rivers.

The sale closed at the end of December for the purchase price of $450,000. City funding for the purchase came from the 2006 Parks and Open Space bond measure.

Following the passage of the 2006 bond measure, property owners along the river were notified that the City was interested in purchasing property that would provide public access to the river in the north. Last year, the Santa Clara Community Organization notified Parks and Open Space (POS) of the availability of this parcel.

Through the winter, POS will be making some minor site improvements including: signage, boundary marking, removal of interior fencing, improving access for maintenance vehicles and some vegetation/debris cleanup.
