[ARCHIVED] Man found deceased in Amazon Slough identified

Yesterday at 4:49 p.m. police received report of a man’s body found in the Amazon Slough at Oak Patch Road/Amazon Creek under the bridge.

Eugene Police and Eugene Springfield Fire EMS responded to the scene, followed by Violent Crimes Unit detectives and the Lane County Medical Examiner. After the man’s body was recovered, he was identified as Dustin Craig Nissen, age 31, of Eugene. He had been reported missing March 26. Detectives contacted his family in person to provide notice of Nissen’s death.

Lane County Medical Examiner retained jurisdiction on the investigation. His death appears to have been accidental and not criminal in nature. Nissen was involved in vehicle pursuit involving another agency on March 24, in which Nissen bailed out of the vehicle while it was still moving and fled on foot. The vehicle was found on City View at the Amazon Slough. A search of the area was conducted to find Nissen, but was unsuccessful.

Nissen’s death is not related to another death that occurred March 12, also in the Amazon Slough, but further east near the Richardson Bridge. In that case the body of Kresmir Tonkovich, age 72, was found at 9:21 a.m., and after an investigation by the Medical Examiner, he was determined to have died of natural causes.
