[ARCHIVED] Unveiling New “Step Into [Augmented Reality] Story” Panels

The City of Eugene Parking Services program continues its partnership with Wordcrafters in Eugene, selecting a new set of short stories for display in the Overpark Garage’s south stairwell starting June 29.

When: Friday, June 29, at 10 a.m.
Where: Overpark Garage, 960 Oak Street, Eugene, OR 97401 on the south side ground level breezeway

Each panel will include an augmented reality component—augmented reality is an emerging technology that superimposes a computer-generated image over the view of the real world, providing a composite visual experience. The City of Eugene is pioneering the implementation of this technology in parking garage art. The Step Into Story panels represent the second installation of a four-part series. In December, Step into [Augmented Reality] Poetry was installed in the Overpark Garage North Stairway.

“The story panels showcase our community of amazing writers, digital artists, and software talent to make the parking experience engaging and fun,” says Jeff Petry, Parking and Technology Manager for the City of Eugene.

In addition to augmented reality features, the new story panels include wayfinding information that reflects and reinforces the new Downtown Wayfinding plan, which will help unify signage throughout the area and contribute to a more enjoyable downtown experience.

The augmented reality features are viewable through a smartphone app created by local startup Glimmer Tech. To download the app, users can visit on their phone’s browser, or visit their phone’s app store and search for GlimmerXP. Signs located in the stairwells will provide visitors with further instruction.
