[ARCHIVED] Police Investigate Fatal Pedestrian-Vehicle Crash

At 12:40 p.m. on June 30, police were called to report of a crash between a Ford Ranger and female pedestrian in a wheelchair. The crash occurred at 215 Division Avenue (cross streets are Lone Oak Avenue and Division Place). The pedestrian, Sheila Kay Freeman, age 47, of Eugene, was crossing in the crosswalk when she was hit. She was transported by medics to a local hospital for treatment. At the time of the call, the injuries were not thought to be life-threatening. However, the victim subsequently died later that day at the hospital.

Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash. The driver, James Allyn Hayes, age 90, of Eugene is cooperating with the investigation.
