Crack sealing is one of the annual summer activities for the Surface Maintenance Team. Our Pavement Management Program provides a list of locations identified by the pavement rater's visual inspection. Some of the streets are only a couple of years old and only the gutter bar typically requires sealing, while other streets are more mature and showing paver seams, transverse and longitudinal cracking and minor alligatoring which requires sealing.
Crack sealing is the first-line of defense in preserving the useful life of our streets. Water migration into the pavement and ultimately into the sub-grade will quickly destroy the road as water freezes, or softens the base and sub-grade thus destabilizing the designed support structure.
With the support of seasonal staff we are able to place 40,000-60,000 pounds of hot applied crack sealant, after thoroughly cleaning the cracks. This season's work will continue until cooler, inclement weather limits efficient application.
