Friday, January 25:
Today at approximately 12:15 p.m., an EPD sergeant observed a red Chevy Impala traveling at a high rate of speed exit 7th Avenue eastbound onto I-105. A short time later the sergeant observed the Impala involved in a five car collision and found that the involved driver fled on foot through the business area north of I-105. Police located and contacted a person of interest at Pentagon Federal Credit Union and are continuing to investigate the incident.
Following the crash, two Oregon State Police Troopers who were in the area rendered aid to the victim in the initial vehicle that was struck by the Impala and Eugene Springfield Fire extricated the victim from the vehicle due to damage to the vehicle. Three additional vehicles were involved in the crash, two with minor damage and a truck with significant damage to the rear from the initial vehicle being pushed into it after it was struck. The truck was on the side of the interstate as its occupants were in front of the vehicle at the time changing the tire and were not injured from the crash. The victim in the initial vehicle was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
Both lanes of I-105 near the Country Club Road exit will remain closed until later this evening while Major Collision Investigations investigates the crash. Oregon Department of Transportation is assisting with rerouting traffic during the investigation.
