On May 14 at 3:04 p.m. a 22-year-old man was changing his tire at Walmart, 4550 W. 11th Avenue, when a man he didn’t know, later identified as David John Coonradt, age 51, of Halsey, threatened him with a tool and stole his Honda Accord. EPD officers responded, and at one point found the vehicle, but it eluded. An officer followed up with a report and sent out an email describing the robbery along with a photo taken by the victim of the suspect. The vehicle was found later in the 3400 block of Jacobs.
A Lane County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to the email and identified Coonradt as the possible suspect. Around 11:30 p.m. on May 14, an EPD sergeant made a person stop on Garfield at W. 8th Avenue after noticing Coonradt. Coonradt was detained without incident. After an investigation, he was found to have taken the vehicle. He was charged with Robbery in the First Degree (Car Jacking), Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, and Eluding Police Officer-felony
