Adaptive Recreation Services began 50 years ago at Washington Park Community Center with a small handful of activities designed to enhance the quality of life of people who experience disabilities. Today, it has become a year-round, nationally recognized program offering more than 2,500 recreational activities annually for individuals who experience physical, cognitive, emotional, mental and social disabilities.
The community is invited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Adaptive Recreation and the 30th anniversary of its current location at the award-winning Hilyard Community Center.
- Date: Friday, Aug. 16
- Time: 3-6 p.m.
- Location: Hilyard Community Center, 2580 Hilyard St.
- Activities: The free celebration features live music, the presentation of a new mural, refreshments, tie-dye activities and more
Among Adaptive Recreation’s services is the popular fleet of adaptive bikes, trikes and recumbents available for rental by the public. Other programs include health and wellness classes, trips, social events and creative arts activities.
