[ARCHIVED] City Hosts Spanish Language Repair and Reuse Event

The City of Eugene regularly hosts Fix-It Fairs, inviting the community to get items repaired at no cost.

On August 17, the City’s Waste Prevention and Green Building program partnered with Petersen Barn Community Center staff to host a Spanish language Fix it Fair at Petersen Barn to engage and serve Spanish speaking community members. Repair services were available at the event for a variety of products, such as lawnmowers and string trimmers, appliances, furniture, electronics, clothing, and home and garden tools.

The City provides reuse and repair education and events to the community for a variety of reasons. In addition to preventing waste, repair shops and services keep money in our local economy and support local families. Repairing broken items gives community members more options than simply throwing items away and learning repair skills is empowering and can help people bring new life to old items.

The Spanish language Fix it Fair was staffed by bilingual or Spanish-speaking repair professionals, and volunteers who generously gave their time and who were critical to the success of the event. Family friendly children’s craft activities, games, and entertainment were also provided in Spanish.
