[ARCHIVED] Keep the 'Space' in Parks and Open Space

Parks and open space provide critical support to our community during this difficult time but warnings about physical distancing as well as closures of playgrounds and skateparks are being ignored.

City of Eugene Parks and Open Space staff are unable to sanitize closed park areas.

In accordance with Governor Brown’s executive order No. 20-12 on March 23, 2020 all skateparks, outdoor sports courts and playground equipment areas are closed until further notice.

Despite posted closure signs and caution tape at the closed playgrounds, outdoor sports courts and skateparks, City staff continue to see high usage of these areas.

While the Governor’s stay-at-home order allows access to Eugene’s parks there are limitations in place to keep everyone safe. Bike paths, trail heads, dog parks and community gardens remain open as long as users are practicing physical distancing.

If you plan to visit a park, strict adherence to physical distancing and equipment closures are mandatory. Please keep the "space" in parks and open space.

  • Maintain a physical distance of at least six feet between anyone not of the same household.
  • Stay home if you are feeling sick.
  • Avoid crowds by arriving early.
  • Visit parks close to home to minimize your travel.
  • Do not use any playground equipment, sports courts or skateparks.

Parks and Open Space is working hard to maintain critical services such as garbage pickup, restroom cleaning, mowing and addressing safety hazards with reduced staff. Park Ambassadors and Eugene Park Resource Officers are providing their regular safety presence in the parks and natural areas.
