On May 26 at around 12:17 a.m., police were dispatched to an armed and suicidal man near River Avenue at the Beltline eastbound ramp. The man, who is in his early 20s had called 911 to have officers come to his location and shoot him. He was threatening to kill himself if officers would not shoot him. He reported he had a handgun and had taken alcohol and numerous pills.
Officers located themselves strategically for this call, and during this, the man drove by officers several times while they were attempting to keep their distance. They were able to get the man on a cell phone and establish a rapport. They convinced him to put his backpack, where the man said he had a firearm, into his vehicle. Officers then moved in and safely took the man into custody on a non-criminal hold and to a local hospital. Officers found the backpack contained not only a firearm, but several extended magazines.
