Around 6 p.m., a protest started with about 75 people at the Federal Courthouse. Within a half hour, the number of protesters doubled to 150. A total of about 225 people left the courthouse and walked to the south Eugene area. EPD issued a traffic advisory to watch for pedestrians who might be in the roadway near Hilyard and 40th.
Eventually the protest moved down various roads, including West Amazon Parkway and 29th, and then down Willamette to the Lane County Jail, where they arrived around 9 p.m. and have been there for a couple of hours.
“I’m impressed with the group dynamics and appreciate the safe manner in which they are conducting themselves,” said Chief Chris Skinner.
There were no issues of concern observed during the protest and the crowd appeared to making an effort to provide safety for the march. EPD’s Traffic Safety Unit was able to provide additional assistance for safe passage through the roads.
There was no curfew put into place.
