[ARCHIVED] Suspect arrested after unlawfully entering two homes, aggressing officer and victim

HQ 2

On June 13, around 6 p.m., police responded to the 500 block of W. 12th Avenue for a male subject who had entered a home without permission, and had subsequently left and was walking south in Patterson Alley. Police located the described suspect on the 1200 block of Patterson Alley and asked him to stop. The suspect, Rodney Lee Retzman, age 57, of Eugene, stopped and sat down on the steps to the residence at the location. During contact with the officer, a female resident walked up the steps and entered the residence. Retzman stood up and followed into the residence behind her and shut the door behind him as he entered. The officer had yelled for him to stop, and entered the residence after him and observed Retzman grabbing the woman as she attempted to exit. He subsequently charged toward the officer, who defended himself and pushed Retzman to the ground. The officer observed Retzman grab a bat, and concerned for the safety of two occupants in close proximity, deployed a taser to take him into custody.

After further investigation, police found that Retzman had stolen an article of clothing from the residence on W. 12th and physically harassed the resident at the home on Patterson Alley, after unlawfully entering both locations. Following contact with Retzman, he was arrested and charged with Burglary in the First Degree, Harassment and Resisting Arrest. He was transported to the Lane County Jail on the charges.
