In May, the Eugene City Council received the Ad Hoc Committee on Police Policy report outlining 50 recommendations for local law enforcement operations and accountability changes.
The City Council would like to hear community feedback and responses to the recommendations presented in the report. Community members are invited to participate in a special public forum dedicated to this topic on July 19 at 7:30 pm. The forum will be held online. Participants will be able to access the forum and sign up to speak that night on the City’s website.
Participants are encouraged to review the report online and share their responses to the recommendations. In addition to the full report, a two-page summary of the recommendations is available on the website. Each participant will have 2.5 minutes to share their feedback. Background
The City Council voted to establish the Ad Hoc Committee on Police Policy (AHCPP) in July 2020 and charged the group with looking at current police policy through the lens of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing and Campaign Zero’s 10-point plan for policing reform and proposing changes to the council.
The AHCPP included 30 members from organizations representing marginalized groups as well as the Eugene Police Commission, the Civilian Review Board, and the Human Rights Commission. The AHCPP met 14 times between September 30, 2020 and April 30, 2021 and formed several subcommittees to help develop the final recommendations related to Community Oversight, Use of Force, Hiring and Training, Body-Worn Cameras and Independent Investigation and Prosecution. The full report was presented to the City Council on May 17, 2021.
