On October 4 at 7 p.m., multiple Eugene Police units responded to a dispute involving weapons at an apartment in the 1400 block of Bailey Hill Road. Officers arrived and attempted to get a man, later identified as John David Winder, age 50, of Eugene, to exit the home without being armed. He initially refused a Central Lane 911 dispatcher’s requests to put down the involved handgun. He later advised he had disassembled the gun and would come outside to speak with officers. Winder was compliant with police during his arrest.
Officers entered the involved apartment and located a 60-year-old man on a couch, uninjured. The involved firearm was located and had been separated from the magazine, but had a round in the chamber. An investigation found the victim and Winder had been watching television, Winder pointed the gun at the victim and threatened to kill him, and held the victim at gunpoint for about 30 minutes.
Winder was taken to the Lane County Jail on charges of Unlawful Use Weapon and Kidnapping in the First Degree.
