The City has received funding from the Oregon Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to School program to make safety improvements to Howard Avenue between River Road and just west of Lake Drive (connecting to the side path in front of Howard Elementary).
Students walking or biking to Howard Elementary School and Kelly Middle School currently have to use narrow shoulders along Howard Avenue to travel to the school. In addition, the intersection at River Road is offset, making crossing the street less intuitive. The current plans call for a physically protected walking and bicycling space on the south side of Howard Avenue, intersection improvements at River Road, new wayfinding signs at major decision-making points, and other safety improvements for the corridor.
We want to hear from you on how best to implement the safety improvements on Howard Avenue! Two virtual open houses are planned for November 17 and 18 via Zoom and a survey is being conducted to gather feedback from the community.
