On November 12 at 7:32 p.m., an officer was in the area of E. 11th Avenue and Mill Street and spotted a Chevrolet Suburban being driven erratically. The officer noted the Suburban did not have a license plate and was listed as a recently stolen vehicle. The officer followed the vehicle and aired for other officers to assist. The vehicle did not slow down, and was driven northbound on High Street. The driver made several unsafe lane changes between vehicles and ran a red light, disregarding cross traffic. The officer found the vehicle had gone over a sidewalk, damaging the front of the vehicle and nearly hitting a tree.
The officer yelled for the driver to stopped, but the command was ignored and the driver continued driving through the parking lot just east of E. 10th Avenue at a very high rate of speed. The driver eventually rammed through a chain link fence, causing substantial damage and ran over several parking blocks. The officer lost observation, but pedestrians in the area helped point the direction the Suburban had gone. It made an unsafe right turn onto Ferry Street from E. Broadway, then the two occupants got out and ran from the SUV, which had a flat front tire.
Sergeant Rob Griesel and K9 Kuiil (pronounced ‘quill’) along with another officer located the passenger, Dustin Jeffrey Shannon, age 23, in front of a credit union E. 11th Avenue and Ferry Street. The driver is still outstanding.
Shannon was taken into custody and transported to Lane County Jail on a warrant and also Unlawful Use of a Vehicle.
