About the Farmers Market Pavilion and Plaza
The new Pavilion and Plaza was built to provide a year-round home for the Lane County Farmers Market and enhance the Northwest Park Block to better support community events and gathering. The 8,515 square foot Pavilion design came as part of the Town Square Concept Plan, completed in 2020, to re-imagine the public space at the intersection of 8th Avenue and Oak Street, which includes the Park Blocks. The Pavilion will be available for community rentals once the Farmers Market is fully settled into the facility and all of their operational needs are met. Expect a busy summer schedule of performances and other public events.
“We are so excited to share this space with our community,” says the City of Eugene’s downtown manager, Eric Brown. “It is a significant achievement that will bolster our efforts to create a vibrant commercial, civic, and cultural hub at the heart of our community.”
Funding for the Farmers Market Pavilion and Plaza comes from the Downtown Urban Renewal Agency with a contribution from Lane County.
This site has hosted a public marketplace for local farmers and food artisans for over 100 years. The pavilion sits where the Eugene Producers Market opened in 1915 and where the Lane County Farmers Market has operated since 1979.The agreement to transfer this land from Lane County to the Urban Renewal Agency to support the Farmers Market was made in 2016, and the project was approved by the Agency Board in 2020.
The Farmers Market Pavilion and Plaza features:
- Roll-up doors to allow smooth transition of indoor and outdoor space,
- Food prep area to support sanitary food sample service and event concessions,
- Expanded plaza adding more space for Market vendors and recreational uses,
- Curbless streets (like Kesey Square) to connect with the south Park Blocks and the businesses on W. Park Street (to be completed with the 8th Avenue Reconstruction project later in 2022 and into 2023).
Public Art Pieces
In the interior of the Pavilion, local artist Michael Boonstra has installed a piece called Willamette River Contours made of mirrored aluminum and stainless steel (photo attached). Muralist Jean Bradbury will brighten the west exterior wall of the Pavilion with a new mural to be completed by early July.
