Aligned with the City’s adopted climate goals, Eugene is poised to become one of the top cycling cities in the nation. As the bike network expands, new protected bike lanes are built, and more of the community begins cycling for transportation and fun, knowing how to ride a bike becomes an important piece of participating in city culture.
Eugene School District 4J, Eugene-Springfield Safe Routes to School, Cascadia Mobility, the City of Eugene, the City of Springfield, and Shift Community Cycles hosted a series of Learn-to-Ride-a-Bike drop-in workshops to address the gaps in our community between those who have learned to ride a bike, and those who haven’t.
Both children and adults received the instruction and practice needed to hone their balancing skills on a bike without pedals, making biking accessible to people of varied abilities. The workshops sent community members away with new skills and activities to work on improving their bike skills.
These family-fun events included pedal-powered smoothies, bike checks, information about bike share, and a chance to head to the streets for traffic safety instruction. More Learn To Ride events will be happening throughout the year, so stay tuned!
During the school year, Safe Routes to School teaches Kindergartners and 1st graders to ride a bike during PE as well as 5th and 6th graders a full 9-hour bike safety education course that gets them riding through the school's neighborhood.
