Along with many across the country and world, I am disturbed and devastated by the news out of Monterey Park, California this weekend. On a night of cultural celebration, with many in Monterey Park gathering with friends and family to celebrate the Lunar New Year, senseless violence has again taken the lives of many and left families and friends grieving and searching for answers.
My heart is with the victims, their families and friends and the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community, both in Monterey Park and in our own community, as they struggle to understand the events of this weekend.
The City of Eugene stands united against all forms of violence and hate. The City Council is dedicated to creating a community where all people can feel safe and free to gather and celebrate in our public spaces, and I ask the Eugene community to keep those affected by the events of this weekend in their thoughts.
