Storytime-To-Go: Volunteer to Bring Storytimes to Local Daycares
In order to help develop early literacy skills among local children who may not have
the opportunity to attend storytimes at the Library, the Storytime-To-Go project brings storytimes
to them. Skilled volunteers lead planned storytimes for young children in day care and other group settings. These enthusiastic and fun sessions also encourage children and their caregivers to read more throughout the week.
Volunteers lead storytimes using training and kits provided by the Library. In addition to reading books aloud, storytimes include leading children in singing songs and other activities. Volunteers also engage childcare providers and encourage their participation during storytime.
Qualifications include: experience working with children under the age of 10 (volunteer or paid); ability to lift 10 pounds; valid driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and use of a car; passing a City of Eugene criminal background check.
The position requires about 3 hours a week, including preparation, travel time, and the storytime itself (a storytime presentation is about 20 minutes long). A 1-year commitment is required. The initial training includes: Storytime-To-Go training program (one instruction class, observing two storytimes, practicing a storytime with feedback) and one Library volunteer orientation meeting.
To apply, please write a letter of interest answering these questions:
1. Why are you interested in this position?
