[ARCHIVED] Coming Soon: 4J Student Library Cards

4J and Eugene Public Library logos

Good news: an expanded partnership with Eugene School District 4J will soon put a free Eugene Public Library card directly into the hands of every 4J student!

A public library card is among the most powerful tools for educational success, as well as providing nearly-endless opportunities for enrichment and entertainment. We're thrilled to help make it as easy as possible for more youth in our community to get the benefits of a public library card.

As we work out the details together, we expect these new Student cards to be issued onsite at 4J schools by early 2024.  Here's some introductory information, with more to come soon.

What will stay the same:

  • Currently, all students at 4J neighborhood and alternative schools (as well as all Bethel School District students) can get a free Eugene Public Library card, regardless of their home address. So can all children ages 0–5 who live within those school districts. This will stay the same after the start of the new 4J program.
  • Currently, library card sign-ups are available by calling or visiting the library. This will stay the same after the start of the new 4J program.

What will be new:

  • Starting sometime this fall or winter, 4J will distribute a pre-registered Eugene Public Library card to every student at a 4J neighborhood or alternative school (not charter schools).
  • Parents who do not wish to have their student participate can opt out in advance by contacting 4J now, or can cancel the account later by contacting the library.
  • These 4J-issued "Student" cards will provide immediate full access to Eugene Public Library's online resources as well as the ability to borrow 5 physical items at a time.
  • What if a student would rather have a regular card, which allows them to borrow more items? They will be able to upgrade their Student card into a regular card at no charge by calling or visiting the library.
  • What about 4J students who already have a regular Eugene Public Library card? They will be able to choose to keep and use both cards, or to cancel one of the cards.

We're very excited about this program and looking forward to it! For now, and until the cards are issued, please address any questions to your 4J school.
