[ARCHIVED] Eugene barber offers haircuts at City Safe Sleep site

City of Eugene Logo with City Skyline

As many as 30 occupants of the 310 Garfield Safe Sleep site will get free pre-Thanksgiving haircuts today at no charge, thanks to a Eugene barber.

Trailhead Barbershop (384 E. 40th Ave.; barber Kwaio Assuman is volunteering his skills to help the unhoused community members at the vehicle site, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the shelter.

An earlier haircut clinic in October at the adjacent 410 Garfield Safe Sleep site was so popular, the City and barber agreed on a series of sessions at shelters.

Many of the site occupants have jobs and others regularly seek employment, so haircuts are important but can be challenging for people of limited economic means or with work schedules that don't fit typical barber hours. And anyone can benefit from the health, well-being and dignity that hair care provides.

The 310 Garfield Safe Sleep site is operated by St. Vincent de Paul Society of Lane County. It opened in October 2021, and hosts 55 spaces for people living out of their vehicles. The location was created and paid for by the City of Eugene as part of its extensive unhoused response, paid for using state and federal American Rescue Plan Act funds.

To arrange a visit to the 310 Garfield Safe Sleep site, please contact City of Eugene unhoused response communications manager Kelly McIver (541-514-6086;
