Construction began July 29 on WJ Skatepark + Urban Plaza in Washington Jefferson Park. When completed, the skatepark will be the country’s largest covered and lit public skatepark.
The 23,000-square-foot custom design is the grand vision of Oregon’s own Dreamland Skateparks, a world-renowned skate design/build firm that has a proven track record of attracting the biggest names in the sport. The design is an ideal blend of street and transition style skate terrain that will keep locals from beginner to elite challenged and returning again and again.
While the skatepark is the star of the show, there is a supporting cast of park renovations that will ensure the health and vitality of this urban park. These renovations include: a new safer and easier-to-maintain restroom relocated out from under the bridge in a much more visible location along Jefferson Street; an urban plaza catering to parents and other park users; vendor pads to accommodate food carts and events; accessible pathways; bike racks; benches; drinking fountains; energy-efficient lighting throughout the park; and carefully selected landscaping that will open up sight lines and increase the sense of safety in this urban park.
The park is expected to reopen next spring.
