[ARCHIVED] Office-Involved Shooting

At 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20, an officer stopped a red Honda mini-bike at the Fire Station driveway on Bailey Hill Road. During the initial encounter, the officer removed a large knife and a hatchet from the mini-bike’s rider, Christopher Lee Koziatek, age 44, of Eugene.

During the officer’s initial contact with Koziatek, Koziatek ran from the officer and the officer gave chase on foot to the southeast side of Churchill High School. The officer called for emergency back-up and a lockdown of Churchill High School. The officer caught Koziatek, who physically resisted and assaulted the officer while also armed with a handgun. Koziatek was shot by the officer.

Responding officers provided emergency medical aid, and Fire/EMS arrived. Koziatek died on scene.

The officer was evaluated at a local hospital and released with no serious physical injuries.

Lane County's Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team responded to investigate.

Pending an investigation and District Attorney Review of findings, Eugene Police will not be providing interviews. The officer’s identity is being withheld pending investigative interviews.
